About the Business

Durham Head Start, located at 215 West Seminary Avenue in Durham, North Carolina, is a school that has been serving children and families since 1965. As part of the Head Start program, they offer a variety of child and family development services to families in need. The program originally focused on children ages three and four, but now includes the Early Head Start Program for children from birth to age three. Families must meet poverty guidelines set by the US Department of Health and Human Services to qualify for enrollment.
Once enrolled, families receive individualized services tailored to their specific needs and goals. Center-based services provide high-quality child care and education at low or no cost, while home-based options offer parent-child playgroups and weekly home visits focused on parent education and child development. All services are offered in Spanish and are free for enrolled families.
Parents play a crucial role in the Head Start program, serving as their child's primary teacher and actively participating in program activities. The Head Start Policy Council, which includes current Head Start parents and community representatives, is responsible for operating the program in partnership with the FCR Board of Directors. Through collaboration and support, Durham Head Start helps families achieve their goals and improve their circumstances.

"I am so thankful for this program! The teachers are phenomenal…very little turnover. Charrisse the director is so kind and always makes herself available to parents."
"I didn't know that this organization allowed people to work there when they were previously told by the state they could not work with kids on any level some months ago.. I have the paperwork in my hand. Regarding ms. Valire Jones . I didn't know that changing your last name could open so many doors.. I guess we will have to investigate a little more with the state.. it cant hurt to find out why they took her license some months ago for child endangerment and mal nourish because we want all kids to be in a safe environment"
