About the Business
Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful park and tourist attraction located at 1403 West Cox Ferry Road in Conway, South Carolina, United States. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities such as fishing, birding, hiking, wildlife observation, photography, and hunting. The refuge offers miles of interpretive nature trails, a mountain biking trail, a boardwalk, kiosks, and a picnic pavilion.
The wetland habitats at Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge are home to diverse wildlife and play a crucial role in the filtration and stormwater retention for the region's drinking water supply. The refuge aims to protect and manage these habitats within coastal river ecosystems while providing wildlife-dependent recreational activities.
The area has a rich history, with Native American tribes living off the land for hundreds of years before European Colonists arrived. Rice plantations once existed along the Waccamaw, Pee Dee, and Black Rivers, with Native Americans and later enslaved peoples working the fields. Today, many of these plantations have been preserved through conservation easements.
Visitors can learn about the history and wildlife of the area at the Environmental Education Center and explore the beautiful landscapes through various outdoor activities. Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge is dedicated to conserving and protecting the natural environment for the benefit of the American people.

"Edit: It looks like they've resumed the regular daytime hours (closes at dusk); apparently, they were doing some trail-maintenance and tidying-up some staging-areas for a week or two. I suppose it'd be nice when they do this to put a notice up at the park-entrance, so that folks who routinely visit won't assume a permanent change in hours. It truly is a nice refuge for critters and people alike."
"It was beautiful. We didn't know it was so close to where we live."
"Visit May 4, 2023. Lovely trail from parking lot to Cox Ferry Lake (Blue Trail) about 4.3 Km (2.7 miles) in 45 minutes at a slow walk. Generally flat with a few tame inclines. Boardwalk through the swampy area was lovely. Not very many bugs at this time of year. Plenty of wildlife (birds, deer) and variety of flora."
"We hiked the blue trail. Very easy, wide, and flat trail with a boardwalk. Loved walking through the swamp."
"Most of my days are spent in the Refuge. There are so many different areas and beautiful things to see and do. I see and read people complaining about bugs- I rarely ever have a problem with bugs ironically. In my opinion the best way to see and explore the vastness is by kayak. It is imperative to be quiet and frequent the area regularly to see new and different things. The flooding is beyond our control due to weather events and over-development thus complaining about flooded trails is misguided. Everyday I see different things that are amazing- some days you see very little animals or birds and others an amazing variety. The goal of the Refuge as a habitat for birds and an area to recreate is met perfectly. This isn't Yellowstone Park so do not come here with unrealistic expectations and you will not be disappointed."
