About the Business
The Reece Museum, located at 363 Stout Drive in Johnson City, Tennessee, is a renowned museum and tourist attraction that has been showcasing the stories of Appalachia for over 50 years. With approximately 22,000 artifacts, the Reece collection provides a comprehensive look at the region's history, art, and culture. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the Reece Museum upholds high standards of excellence and is one of only eighteen museums in Tennessee to receive this prestigious accreditation.
The museum's origins date back to the late 1920s when it was established as a class project by history professor Maxine Mathews. Over the years, the museum has grown significantly, thanks in part to a generous donation from Louise Goff Reece, wife of Congressman Brazilla Carroll Reece. Today, the Reece Museum continues to honor the memory of Congressman Reece by serving as a "storehouse of knowledge" for the university's students and the state's citizens.
As a unit of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services, the Reece Museum is dedicated to serving the Appalachian region through its exhibitions, collections, and community engagement. Admission to the museum is free, and it is open to the public. For more information, contact 423-439-4392. Visit the Reece Museum to explore the rich history and culture of Appalachia.

"A wonderful building on the college campus and there were three exhibitions all had a interesting theme... please support the art's and your local Gallery's and Museum's....."
"Very thoughtful and curiously curated collections"
"Small, clam and doesn’t overwhelm people with sensory issues. Slow paced never felt rush as it is not busy.. The kindest people. Helped me with parking when website was confusing."
"This small museum has different exhibits and talks time to time. We once came to the museum for a talk about WW I and learned about Sargent Stubby, the only dog to achieve the rank of Sargent in the army for his service. Kind of neat and there was an animated movie about him too. Before our visit we went to the Culp Center for a dinner meal. I was surprised at the variety of meal choices including Vegan options. Nothing like when I was attending classes there. Anyway the museum is a nice place to visit with ample parking but be sure to get a pass if you are there before 4"
"The current displays are student-based (elementary through high school), which is great! There was also a small music exhibit. However, based on previous reviews, I was expecting at least a few more stereotypical works of art. That was a little disappointing. The museum is on the very beautiful campus of East Tennessee State University."
