"What a gem of a place, in an unexpected location! I grew up around here, and whenever I'm back visiting I always find something new. Most recently was Old Spool Sewing Studio. I needed some sewing supplies as a gift for a very special seamstress in my life. Julia, one of the owners, was amazing in helping me find just the right items. So much care and attention! Oh, and the seamstress couldn't be happier with her presents. I will definitely be back to this store. Their classes must be amazing. I saw the space and now knowing the staff...there's no doubt I'd take the adult ones if I lived closer by!"

"Julia is amazing. I think she does the most important thing when being a teacher and that is instilling confidence in her students. I “learned” to sew by tackling a t-shirt quilt using only my brand new machine’s manual, YouTube videos and some emails with my cousin. I made it through, but I knew nothing about sewing or how to properly use a sewing machine at the end of it. I reached out to Julia who put me in touch with Mandy (also an excellent instructor!) who helped me finish the quilt. When I met Julia and Mandy in person, I knew I had found excellent resources and signed up for Julia’s Adult Beginner Sewing class - it was amazing how much I didn’t know and how much I did by the end of that first class. Julia never makes you feel incompetent or less than stellar - she uses real terms as well as little tricks for remembering things - and it sticks! I left feeling I could conquer more, and I signed up for more (The Portsmith Tote which was taught by Mandy - my confidence continued to grow with her as well!) Julia and Mandy are not only excellent instructors, they have a wealth of knowledge and a passion that is contagious. I’ve watched her excitedly grow the retail side of her business as well, and the selection is so varied and extensive. I am upgrading my machine from the basic one I originally purchased because the possibilities are endless. I am not perfect by far and have so much to learn, and I am so excited to be able to do that with Julia, Mandy and whoever else Julia trusts as instructors!"
