"This place is absolutely awful. My dad was scheduled to arrive to the facility after spending time in an inpatient rehab center in Richmond for a cervical spine injury (in which he became quadriplegic). My mom and I toured the facility and were told that he would have a private room on the skilled nursing side of the building. We were told he would be evaluated by a physician and all required medications and therapies would be ordered. Once arriving, my dad was placed into a semi private room. The drawers to place his clothes were full of dead roaches. She demanded another room and he was moved to another semi private room. When we inquired about a private room we were told they were all for patients on isolation. Taylor, the admissions coordinator, was unhelpful and unsympathetic during this process of us trying to get answers. Took HOURS to get a call bell suitable my father. Food was inedible. Hallways smelled. Rooms were dirty and unkept. Dead roaches in hallways. Had to get water from bathroom sink. Understaffed and overworked and it shows. He was admitted on a Friday and was told that the doctor wouldn’t see him until Monday and they could TRY to get all of the meds he has ordered during the weekend. My dad had a medical emergency and passed away at VB General Hospital so he only had to spend 3 days this place. Never had an evaluation from a doctor. I’m unsure where the positive reviews are coming from but DON’T BELIEVE THEM"
"If you are looking for a place to send your loved one for Rehab choose Virginia Beach Health and Rehab. Their activities staff make the patients feel welcomed and they always have something fun to keep their patients busy. Whether its a fun craft, some bingo, or some other fun games Grace and her Therapeutic Rec team do it all! Kudos to VB Health and Rehab Activities team for all of the hard work that they do."
"My grandmother was here for about a month. She enjoyed the physical therapy with Natalia, which is saying a lot for her as she isn't able to exercise for long periods. They really helped her out a lot, as she had been in a different rehab recently that released her even though she couldn't get out of a chair. This rehab wanted to keep her for a while longer, but she got a room at an assisted living. She wasn't crazy about the food, and the room's she stayed in haven't been updated in a while, older hospital beds and tiny tvs, which she couldn't see as she's 90 years old, and I think it caused her to go a bit stir crazy just staring out the window all day. A large tv with one of those speakers by her head would have helped a lot. But it was all worth it for the physical therapy, and the staff was great, she especially liked Emily, Skye, and Octavia."
"VA Beach Health and Rehab Center is a horrible place to have your loved one get skilled nursing services. MIL had a medical issue while traveling. When I called the first day to check if everything was ok, the "nurse" that I spoke to was incredibly rude and condescending. I asked to speak to her supervisor. She hung up on me. So, I called back and asked for the nursing supervisor. Vanessa is her name. She, too, was incredibly rude and condescending. "I am short staffed and ain't got time for this nonsense." That was her direct quote. There are no phones in the resident rooms, and the people MIL was traveling with took her cell phone home with them. We had no way of contacting MIL for several days. I asked to speak to the doctor (regarding medical condition). "Our doctor ain't got time to take calls." I insisted. When he did call, "I don't know why I am talking to you." Because we are out of state and are concerned. The social worker noted bruising and bed sores. I asked for a special mattress to alleviate the symptoms. "I am a medical doctor. I don't deal with that.". Um, bruising and bed sores are not medical issues? "Ma'am, I will not argue with you. I don't deal with that.". I wonder what he really did do?! MIL complained of several days of not getting her medications. Upon inspection of the pill packs, she is correct. There are several med errors. MIL said she had to wait over 2 hours to get help to use the bathroom. She stated that she had not had a shower in 10 days. Incredibly, when we showed up, she was showered. She had a gash on her hand. She asked for a bandaid. It took 2 days and my demanding for a band aid. MIL said she would love a toothbrush for Christmas. No one, including the social worker, checked to see if she had the basics, like a toothbrush. And MIL will not speak up for herself (honestly, I cannot blame her in this situation). She went 3 weeks without a toothbrush. While there, staff was fake kind...so obviously fake. Upon arrival to remove her from the facility, several used latex gloves littered the main entrance, as if staff took them off and threw them on the ground. Nice way to be greeted, eh? I have nothing positive to say except the therapists were amazing! If it wasn't for the therapy director reaching out, we would still be fighting to get her home. The last evening we were there, a nurse got mouthy with another visitor and then stormed off. "You are to be here before 4, not after!" I told the visitor to take note and report it. "Absolutely!" The nurse went on dropping f bombs because someone's blood pressure was high. Our elderly do not deserve that treatment. I fully intend on lodging complaints. I took photos to back up my claims. The above rants are only the tip of the iceberg. This facility is in dire need of a major overhaul, starting with the nursing staff."
"The night we arrived, the evening male nurse told me and my husband, when he checked us in, he would be putting a diaper on my husband and urinals were not offered because he was the only nurse for 35 patients. They did get my husband a urinal when I told them my husband was continent and he would not be wearing a diaper. They did say they would assist him if needed, but I was there with him all night. Hopefully, the staff will read the patients’ chart in the future to preserve patient dignity. The aides were very nice whenever I called for someone to help me the ONE night he was there. The interior of the building is in a bit of disrepair. That’s not the facility’s fault, though. The nurse said vitals were taken once a shift; however, no one came in all night to do vitals. That would have been beneficial to catch what was going on with him earlier, but thank God for the nurse who did check his vitals in the morning when I asked her to and for calling an ambulance for him, as he was septic when discharged from Virginia Beach General Hospital. I cannot comment on the actual rehab part because he was discharged the next morning. Everyone was friendly when I returned to get his things from his room."
