About the Business

Aikido Shobukan Dojo, located at 421 Butternut Street Northwest in Washington, D.C., is the headquarters school of Aikido Schools of Ueshiba under Mitsugi Saotome Shihan. This unique institution offers a large training mat and diverse instruction throughout the day and on weekends, making it a cultural icon for Aikido dojos worldwide.
The dojo offers two membership programs, one for adults and another for children and teens. The Adult Program includes morning, mid-morning, evening, and weekend practice sessions, providing approximately 80-100 sessions per month. The youth program focuses on physical activity, discipline, and setting the foundation for martial arts practice.
Aikido Shobukan Dojo welcomes members from other dojos and martial arts, offering daily mat fees for visitors and hosting seminars with senior ASU instructors. Special guest instructors, such as Terumasa Hino Shihan from Hombu Dojo in Tokyo, are featured in seminars throughout the year.
The dojo also hosts events like the Annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which coincides with the Cherry Blossom Seminar led by Saotome Sensei. The dojo's philosophy of uniting θ (sho) and ζ¦ (bu) reflects the challenge inspired by O'Sensei, connecting practitioners to the art of Aikido.
Overall, Aikido Shobukan Dojo is a premier institution for Aikido training in North America, offering a welcoming and inclusive environment for practitioners of all levels.
Reviews
"A great place to train, a wonderful community. Good for the mind, body and spirit. With direct conneciton to the founding principles of Aikido (through Saotome Sensei)"
"My first day was on Friday and I was welcomed in the best way. They took their time out of their day to slowly show me the moves step by step. When you arrive to the dojo you will also sense big positive and peaceful energy. So I would recommend it."
"Our family has been in attendance for some time, starting with our daughter who began when she was 4. Mr Cuffy was an AMAZING youth and teens Aikido sensei. He had a unique style that rapidly built self-confidence and self-reliance in our daughter, and taught her unquestionably to never give up, even when you think you can't do something, because some day you WILL do that thing. During COVID, we were not able to attend as we had before, but eventually our daughter was able to rejoin, first with virtual classes, then with socially distanced outdoor classes. This past year, Mr Cuffy had passed, leaving behind a partner of many years, who continues on in his place with her own way of doing things. Ms. Bluestone, Mr Cuffy's very long time partner, brings all of the wisdom and patience to the children that Mr Cuffy had. While our family sorely misses him, we are eager to continue with this dojo, both as adult participants, and our daughter, looking to find her way forward in life. The Adult program is equally amazing. The teachers all have a unique view on the world, but are immensely patient, and universally breed calm and confidence in the students. We look forward to participating in this dojo for many more years to come."
"The richness of the martial arts knowledge of the Shobukan community is perhaps only met by its warm and friendly nature. From some of the top aikido teachers to advanced martial arts practitioners to former special services officers to 65 year old rank beginners to teenagers to 5 year old children, the Dojo has a place for everyone. The Dojo offers close to 40 hours of classes/mat time per week, including the BEST kids program of any martial arts school that I have seen."
"Beautiful Dojo a short walk from the Takoma metro station. They have classes every day of the week, and on most days multiple classes. The instructors and experienced students are very helpful and patient for those who are new. I would recommend observing first to see if it is for you. I am really enjoying it so far. I found this was exactly what I was personally looking for, though it may not be right for everyone."
