The Battle of New Market

The Battle of New Market institution is located at 8895 George Collins Parkway in New Market, Virginia, United States. This historic military college, Virginia Military Institute (VMI), has been producing leaders of integrity and honor since 1839. With a focus on a challenging four-year core curriculum and a student to teacher ratio of 10:1, VMI offers an undergraduate experience like no other.

Cadets at VMI participate in a rigorous academic program with 14 nationally recognized majors, as well as engaging in the leading Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program in the United States. The Institute emphasizes discipline, honor, and respect, preparing cadets for exemplary military service.

VMI believes in developing the whole person, including through athletics, and the Keydets participate in NCAA Division I sports. The Institute is deeply connected to its alumni and the Lexington community, offering opportunities for the public to support its mission and cadets.

The Battle of New Market museum on site provides a chance to reflect on the historic battle that took place in 1864, where young VMI cadets fought bravely. The museum features exhibit galleries, a tourist information center, and a 300-acre battlefield park preserving the history of the area.

Visitors can also enjoy an audio tour of the battlefield, schedule a guided tour with a museum interpreter, or learn about advertising opportunities at the museum. The museum is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with holiday closures on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
