Off the Record

"This is a timeless bar, situated in the red carpeted walls of the Hay-Adams Hotel basement. It is very "happening" and I've personally seen some very noodle people there. It feels deeply traditional because of the top notch bartenders and the fact that half of the men will be wearing ties. There is no dress code that I know of, but don't embarrass yourself. Joe Sixpack with a backwards hat he doesn't know to take off inside likely won't be kicked out. But jeez. The drinks are more than other places, but not shockingly so, and are in line with the professionalism and quality with which they are made. Go out to the hotel culdesac and see that the night is illuminated by the Whitehouse itself across Lafayette and you will realize that you are at the center of power of Washington DC. No wonder at all that this place exists outside of time, in a wholly different place."

"Stopped by with a friend and my wife after a wonderful high end dinner that deserved a nice place for a night’s drink. We decided to try Off the Record and we were very happy we did! Definitely a political vibe, and a place to be seen if you want to in DC. Truly, I’m more interested in the drinks and the cookies and ice cream were delicious! Can’t really tell you about the food, but dessert was delicious and we enjoyed the bar snacks that they bring to your table!"

"Whenever I am in the area, I stop by for a drink just to see the seasonal drinks and the coasters. I also love the atmosphere. It gets crowded, so it is best if you get there earlier in the day. It is also walking distance from the White House, so you are in the heart of the city. They also serve food, but it is on the higher end of the price range."

"What a busy lively place! Located in the lower level of the Hay-Adams... Get there early for a table. Elegant decor with a more mature crowd. The cocktails are on the high end but delicious. Service is slow... but friendly and helpful. This place is busy! We loved the atmosphere... We would definitely return!"
