"When I was submitted to U of Md St Joe’s hospital I was at deaths door. I was malnutritioned and had lost 50 pounds from an invasive cancer . I came from FREDERICK MEMORIAL HOSPITAL and was incredibly relieved when Dr Mackey took me under his care. They could’ve probably put me in hospice but he decided that he wanted to try to save me. He’s the most fantastic surgeon. He removed a malignant tumor the size of a grapefruit and got the best Ostomy surgeon by his side to also relieve my pain with an ostomy bag and re-sectioning of the small bowel. He took care and time with preparing me for the surgery and had orders for a pic line so I could be fed to get my malnutritioned body strength up so that I could get through this very intensive surgery. Dr Mackey has a very distinguished and quiet manner. I think some people have misread him because he tends to have a poker face which I am sure he has learned to do to protect his own patients. I found him to be encouraging, compassionate,,highly concerned and that when he took on a patient it is with every tool in his wheelhouse. He said to me he loves absolutely loves what he does every day (surgery) and he loves going to work and helping patients. He literally saved my life and added time to my lifetime. I think he’s an incredible surgeon who enjoys solving complicated medical situations with his patients. He was warm & friendly. Highly professional."

"I was under Dr. Mackey's care for 8 months in 2017, when I was suddenly struck with necrotizing pancreatitis and rushed to the St Joseph's Hospital emergency room; I spent 66 days in the hospital and over 40 in Intensive Care. I was a challenge for the entire medical staff, with risks of infections and internal organ damage. But I always found Dr, Mackey to be compassionate with regard to pain management, and would always listen to me (and was anxious to learn) how I was feeling , in addition to reviewing and evaluating all of the blood/lab data. For the entire 8 month period, I felt that Dr. Mackey was my ally and advocate, sensitive to how both my body and mind were feeling. I felt like he cared , but with a technical eye to finding and generating the solution. I would seek him out should I need any pancreatic or other surgery again!"

"Dr Mackey is a good surgeon; however, his bedside manner and compassion are completely bankrupt. If you are already in a pain mgmt for chronic/acute pain, please do not have surgery by Dr Mackey. He will not cover your post-op pain and will tell you he can’t because his hands are tied. I spoke with every person to include federal and local government and was told post-op pain, hospice or short term temporary treatment is allowed. He is barbaric! I was in such pain because my daily med was much less than what he was prescribing to other patients with less invasive surgery that I could not move, sleep or eat for days. Perhaps one day a doctor will return the favor to him. Classic case of discrimination!"

"I just left his office. I found him personable, easy to talk to and had already talked to my GI doc so he knew EXACTLY how I was feeling. I was scheduled for surgery next week because he knew how I felt. I am very much at ease being in his hands."
