"Definitely stop here for lunch before or after your museum visit. Absolutely loved the food here. The fried chicken was tender and well seasoned. And comes with hot sauce. Very tasty options (except the sweet potato) but I think the meal was pretty expensive at over $20 (but the museum itself is free) w/o a drink. Just get a cup of water. Don't be fooled by the many bottles of Dasani sitting out by the trays. Those are $4.50 a bottle. Also, I didn't really like the "school lunchroom" style seating. I visited the museum solo and all the seating (as far as I could tell) was set up for multiple people, which could make someone visiting solo (me) feel like they're taking up a whole table or just a little bit unwelcome. So a variety of seating options would be nice."
"The chicken dinner was delicious! The collards greens was a little sweet for my taste, but, didn't slow me down. Best cafe of the Smithsonian museums. As a side note, anywhere you eat in the tourist area is expensive. I got a small ice cream cone from a food truck on the street and it was 7$. That, was overpriced!"
"Stopped in while at the museum. I was very impressed with the braised pork. It came with sides I got the coconut rice & okra as well as the curry chickpeas. My partner got the spinach and rice along with sweet potato pie. The pork is excellent, a bit greasy and the okra rice has mild coconut flavor that goes great with the pork. The curry chickpeas are full of flavor. The spinach is a bit slimy but tasted okay and the sweet potato pie was good too. Overall solid—about $25/plates after drinks."
"What a way to end the African American Smithsonian experience!!! The Sweet Home Cafe was such a delight and a sweet welcome surprise. Their customer service was absolutely amazing. The food looked and tasted soooo good. The chicken and fish were golden brown. The ribs looked scrumptious. I mean everything looked so tantalizing. I had two helping of collard greens, green beans and cornbread. It was such a great way to appreciate the art of soul food."
"Disappointed! I would recommend this business only if there was no where else to eat in the area which is not a problem. It is overpriced. There was 8 in our party and the cost was $200. The meatloaf was not good and the scallop potatoes were ok. The cabbage, beans and rice lacked proper seasoning. The only foods we liked was the fried chicken and the piping hot cornbread. The Mac and Cheese tasted like Kraft. It was not baked long enough and was flavorless. The yams were sweet but that was all I tasted; no other spices. It tasted like they came out of a can like the collard greens that were not seasoned. For vegetarians I can see this meatless option may be suitable; but for a southern plate I expected hammocks, neckbones or some type of meat. In general we expected a lot more flavor"
