"Personal opinions about family therapy-- I am sure that Vivian is trying to the best of her ability to be helpful. However, I felt that she deferred to one family member's assessment that one child was acting badly over others' experiences. I felt like an assessment of how much power that child had in the family after only having spoken to that child for the first time and for less than 10 minutes was concerning and felt like a faster judgment than I would have thought was possible. I'm not a mental health care professional so maybe that is all it takes. I also felt like there was a one-size-fits-all script that was applied to clients. It might be a good one-size-fits-all script. I felt like a more tailored approach might be better. You know really listening and then adjusting. Focusing most weeks for 4-5 months on a mantra of people having to take responsibility for the own feelings without time spent on focusing on taking responsibility for actions worried me. My kids never knew what taking responsibility for one's feelings meant or how to apply it. I expressed my concern about that several times. Again, just a feeling from a regular person. This is only my experience/opinion. Please understand that since these are only my thoughts and memories, that doesn't mean that I am right. Plus the kids told me that they felt left out and condescended to while any progress came at a glacial pace. I feel similarly about the lack of progress. Apparently, miracles can happen though. I think the more information to help others make decisions, the better. Please read the other reviews, not just mine!"
