Josephine Butler Parks Center
About the Business
The Josephine Butler Parks Center, located at 2437 15th Street Northwest in Washington, DC, is a 40-room, 18,000 square-foot Renaissance Revival mansion overlooking Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park. Operated by Washington Parks & People, the center serves as a "greenhouse" for restoring DC parks and green spaces, and incubates community-based nonprofits aligned with their mission. The award-winning restoration features environmental retrofitting and modern adaptations to serve the needs of the community.
Formerly the Embassy of Hungary and Brazil, the historic mansion was designed by architect George Oakley Totten Jr. and was once home to Mary Foote Henderson, a prominent figure in Washington's cultural history. The area around the Parks Center is rich in history, with ties to Native American spiritual grounds, Civil War hospitals, and notable figures like President John F. Kennedy.
The Center offers a variety of spaces for special events, performances, art exhibitions, and programs for members. With a focus on community health and green initiatives, the Parks Center is a hub for park-based activities and serves as a cultural landmark in the heart of the city.

"This venue is used by many. On Tuesday evenings it is for SWING DANCING! The New Columbia Swing Dance group does lessons and a drop-in DJ dance on Tuesdays. This is a great space - for just about any group."
"Attended a wedding here and had such a blast. The building is beautiful and a great canvas for party decorations. Lots of different spaces available to use. The second floor ceremony room is beautifully intimate and wonderfully lit."
"We had our wedding here in April 2023. It’s a beautiful, early twentieth century mansion overlooking Meridian Hill / Malcolm X Park. The history of the building as the headquarters of Washington Parks and People adds extra meaning to the venue. We rented the Terrace and initially the South Gallery for our small wedding of 20-25 guests. We had a wonderful time. Our event contact at JBPC, Ashleigh, was very flexible and even found us some extra space in the Ballroom when it looked like it might rain (thankfully, it did not). JPBC’s onsite coordinator, Katrina, took care of all the details the day of the event. In retrospect, we would have hired our own day-of coordinator (as is expected by the venue) - it was a very small wedding but there were still a lot of details that came up on the big day!"
"We checked out multiple venues in DC, but none captured the vision we had for our October 19, 2019 wedding like the Josephine Butler Parks Center. The space is beautiful enough to not need too much decoration but simple enough to be a blank canvas if you wanted to go big. We had 120 guests and it felt both spacious and intimate. Malina was very informative and helpful and has done the wedding rodeo enough times to have answers to every question we threw at her. And we felt especially great about using the Center because we knew we were supporting the Washington Parks!"
