JHU The Alexander Grass Humanities Institute
About the Business
The Alexander Grass Humanities Institute (AGHI) at Johns Hopkins University is a hub for the world-renowned humanities departments on campus, as well as other dynamic departments in the humanistic social sciences. Located at 3400 North Charles Street in Baltimore, Maryland, AGHI sponsors scholarly meetings, public events, visiting scholars, and student fellowships and research projects.
One of the recent projects co-sponsored by AGHI and the Department of History of Art was a performance inspired by the tragedies of gender reveal parties and Anne Carson's Bakkhai. This theater project was co-directed by Maxe Crandall and Hope Mohr.
AGHI also hosts various events, including the Humanities on the Mall series, which will feature a film screening of "Devoti Tutti [Devoted]," exploring the feminist afterlives of worship and witness around Saint Agatha of Catania. The institute is open to the public and aims to engage with the broader community.
Additionally, AGHI recently hosted Professor Merve Emre as the Macksey Lecture speaker, known for their work as a public essayist and interviewer. The institute is deeply involved in the Johns Hopkins and Baltimore communities, and recently mourned the loss of Professor Shani Mott, a respected leader in Africana Studies, History, and housing equality.
