Reviews of Mount Vernon High School
"They say they are military friendly but what they mean is they welcome the extra money coming in for each military kid that attends. They do VERY little to nothing to support the military kids. Unfortunately we are stuck sending our kids here. If you decide to live on Fort Belvoir and send your high schooler(s) to this school be prepared. Otherwise you might consider living in a better school district."
"I graduated in 1979, I assure all of you, back then, the staff were very professional, never any trouble except every now and then some students were caught smoking pot, suspended and almost didn't graduate. The students cared about each other and the reputation of our school. The only thing that ever happened to me, I was a freshman on the first day of school, a senior sent me to the other side of the school to find my class which was back close to where I was to start with, no big deal, just late. That was the only thing most got in trouble for, late to class. Everyone there make the school what it is, including the parents. If you don't like a dirty bathroom, change it, if someone is rude they should be reprimand not just allowed to disrespect others. Grow up and take responsibility. Your school experience and after you graduate into the real world, it will not be "all about you""
"It is a very bad school. The teachers are really bad at their lessons. As a student I like to remember the lessons for the test but it's non-existent here. The people here are also bad and rude. This is the one of the worst schools I been to since Liberty Middle School in Orlando, FL. The food is bad and the restrooms are barely clean. The only good thing in this school is the Junior ROTC and my friends."
"I love MVHS! Even though this year's new counselors are kid of unreliable, the school is great! Dr. Terrell is an awesome principle, because he's not sexist (like the past two who were women being sexist to other girls), he doesn't ONLY support the sports program, he supports the arts and comes to concerts within the music department, he doesn't enforce pointless rules like the dress code, and he's really positive and nice. This year's football team got better, and I highly recommend joining theater arts or chorus, orchestra, or band. I'm in Vocal Recall this year (as a sophomore) and I love Mrs. Belzer because she's an awesome chorus teacher and she's very supportive of everyone, the orchestra has a new teacher this year (Mr. Bess), and band has a lot of amazing performers (the teacher is Mr. Bacz). The teachers are all really great and actually do their job. Many classes I didn't enjoy outside of Mount Vernon I enjoy here, and I got better grades as well. I guess because MVHS doesn't enforce strict rules and regulations there are less distractions for me and I feel like have more freedom here."
"Don't waste your time. I went to Mount Vernon for 2 years. I solely regret not going to a private school. Trashy kids. Lazy teachers. Lazy principals. Period. Awful SAT Scores and Awful SOL passing rate. If you must, take them to West Potomac or Hayfield. If you want your kid to go to a top college Mount Vernon won't get you there."
