About the Business
Wissahickon Waterfowl Preserve, located at 1-93 Maple Avenue in Ambler, Pennsylvania, is an 18-acre park along the Wissahickon Creek. Owned and maintained by the Wissahickon Waterfowl Preserve (WWP), a nonprofit organization, this preserve is a birding hotspot and offers a picnic area with benches. The park features stroller-friendly, hard trail surfaces and welcomes leashed dogs.
Established in 2006, the preserve was purchased by the WWP with the goal of creating a beautiful space for the community while protecting the environment. The site was once part of the BoRit Asbestos Superfund Site, but after cleanup efforts by the EPA, it now boasts a 511-foot hard surface walking path and benches around the 11-acre pond.
Visitors can easily access the preserve from the Green Ribbon Trail or Ambler Borough by foot, bike, car, bus, or regional rail. The pond provides habitat for a variety of birds year-round, including wood ducks, herons, sparrows, and various duck species. Rare sightings of birds such as red-necked phalaropes and common goldeneyes have been documented.
The preserve also features an artificial chimney constructed in 2018 to provide nesting and roosting sites for chimney swifts, a bird species whose populations have been declining. To combat habitat loss for chimney swifts, four towers have been installed at various locations including Wissahickon Waterfowl Preserve.
Visitors to the preserve can learn more about the EPA's work at the Ambler site and enjoy the beauty of nature while supporting conservation efforts for local bird species.

Reviews
"It's a little bit hit or miss. It can be an excellent spot for migrating waterfowl and shorebirds during migration. Other times it can be quite disappointed. It all depends upon the day, the winds and the time of year. Recently, some observation stands have been added. That helps."
"Short trails are distant from the water. Binoculars are essential to see the birds."
"Nice place to watch birds. There are several spots to approach the fence if the grass and brush are high. New observation platforms are outstanding."
"Great place to walk around and do some Bird watching :)"
"This is a nice little preserve, located just off the main road. I'm rating it 5 stars based on how it fulfills its purpose as a preserve. The lake is fenced off so that no one can get in. This allows birds and other animals to live or stop over there uninterrupted. You also can't walk all the way around the lake. Nevertheless, this provides birds with a safe place to land, leading to occasional sightings of birds you normally wouldn't see in a city like Ambler. Update: Previously, I'd noted that it was difficult to get a good look at the birds here. Since then, someone's built larger stepping stools, making it much easier for those of us who are vertically challenged. Thank you to whoever did that!"
