About the Business
Riversdale House Museum, located at 4811 Riverdale Road in Riverdale Park, Maryland, is a historic 19th-century Maryland plantation site that offers over 200 years of diverse stories to tell. This National Historic Landmark provides insight into the lives of enslaved individuals, such as Adam Francis Plummer, as well as the Stier and Calvert families. Visitors are invited to explore the historic structures, gardens, and grounds through a one-hour guided tour.
The Riversdale Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, supports the preservation and presentation of the museum in cooperation with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. Memberships help fund restoration projects, interpretive initiatives, and collection care.
The museum's kitchen garden and orchard showcase fruits and vegetables grown to support the early 19th-century community. Volunteers maintain the gardens, demonstrate historic cooking techniques, and host chamber music concerts and special events throughout the year.
Volunteering opportunities at Riversdale House Museum include transcribing historical documents, working in the gardens, serving as tour guides, and assisting with live cooking demonstrations. Volunteers must be 15 or older and undergo a background check. Training is provided for all positions.

"Ms. Bartley gave an exceptionally informative 90 minute tour detailing the lives of ALL the residents of this estate. Be sure to call ahead for the tour times. Ms. Bartley stated that tours are presently being given only on Friday and Sunday afternoons (except to large groups that make reservations in advance)."
"I have lived in the area for a decade and didn't know this place existed. Beautiful old mansion with so much history. Ties going back to the French Revolution and the earliest settlers in the area. They do not shy away from the entire story, including the enslaved families that lived here. The volunteers who do the tours were knowledgeable and kind. A couple hours is about what you need to tour the house and see the grounds. Very enjoyable for sure. Check this place out it is set in the middle of a residential area so if you aren't looking, you may miss out. Set your GPS and spend a few hours here."
"This was the perfect follow up to a lunch at 2Fifty Texas BBQ, in Riverdale Park, MD. My group went for a walk and ended up taking the tour of Riverdale House. We received a nice welcome in the visitor's center and purchased tickets for the tour. The welcome center staff gave us a brief intro to the property before directing us to the House, where we were greeted by the guide. What followed was a fascinating look at an 18-19th Century estate with ties to Flanders, the first family of Maryland and a connection to the Washingtons and the University of Maryland. I highly recommend this tour. You learn about much more than a house and get a deeper understanding of the region and Nation's history as well as some European history."
"My family (including our 2 dogs) did a family photo shoot here. The property is very nice and offers many possibilities for photos. There are tables and more than enough space for family outings, relaxing, or just trying to get away from the noise of the outside world."
"V was a great tour guide today very personable and knowledgeable. The home and property is beautiful and will definitely be back!"
