About the Business
The Greater Rhea Exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, D.C. showcases the largest South American bird, the greater rhea. These flightless birds are known for their long legs, long necks, and unique plumage. Visitors can observe the rheas up close and learn about their natural habitat and behaviors.
The Zoo is free to visit, but entry passes are required for all guests, including infants. Members of the Zoo receive exclusive benefits and support animal conservation and wildlife research. Donations are also welcome to help care for the animals and support conservation efforts.
Rheas are omnivorous birds that feed on a variety of plants, seeds, fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. During the breeding season, males display impressive courtship behaviors to attract females and care for the eggs and chicks. The rhea population has faced challenges due to hunting and habitat loss, but efforts are being made to protect these unique birds.
In addition to the Greater Rhea Exhibit, visitors can explore other areas of the Zoo, such as the Small Mammal House and Bird House, where they can see a variety of species and learn about conservation efforts. The Smithsonian's National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute is a must-visit destination for animal lovers and supporters of wildlife conservation.

Reviews
"Even though the Greater Rhea is a flightless bird, it's still impressive to see! They grow to around 4 to 5 feet tall with long legs, grayish-brown plumage, and a distinctive head with a short, curved beak. They're known for strong running ability and live in grasslands and open areas, often forming groups called "herds." I enjoyed stopping by their exhibit here at the zoo."
