Chickering Bog Natural Area
About the Business
Chickering Bog Natural Area is a beautiful park and tourist attraction located in Plainfield, Vermont, just 15 minutes from the state capital of Montpelier. This wide-open peatland is surrounded by dark tamarack, spruce and fir forest, creating a peaceful and secluded atmosphere. Despite its name, Chickering Bog is actually a fen, fed by calcium-rich groundwater and springs. Visitors can explore a two-mile trail and boardwalk named after former director Bob Klein, which allows for up-close views of fen plants such as blue flag iris and showy lady's slipper orchids, as well as a variety of wildlife including bullfrogs, wood ducks, barred owls, and more.
Chickering Bog is now recognized with a Class I Wetland Designation, highlighting its importance in conservation efforts. The area was fully protected in 2014, ensuring the preservation of its unique ecosystem. Visitors can easily access the natural area by following Route 2 and Route 14 from Montpelier, and can use the Avenza Maps app to track their position while exploring the trails.
This special natural area is home to a diverse range of fen plants, birds, and mammals, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers. With its mix of wetlands, uplands, and Lake Champlain shoreline, Chickering Bog offers a unique opportunity to explore Vermont's newest preserve and largest carbon project.

"It is a very cool place but to preserve it, no dogs allowed, no research allowed, ver limited access."
"Take a good look and photo of the map in the parking lot. I have a good sense of direction and never made it to the boardwalk! Nice walk in the woods anyway"
"Quiet, easy to hike trail. There is a boardwalk that takes you out to look at a cute open area with a pond. Family friendly, dog friendly trail."
"Lovely secluded, quiet nature trail. Hundreds of pitcher plants in the fen!"
"October is the perfect time for this easy hike. We were the only hikers on the trail."
