About the Rachel Carson Preserve
The Rachel Carson Preserve, located at 150 Maine 32 in Bristol, Maine, United States, is a unique park that serves as a tidal pool and rocky shore that inspired Rachel Carson's book, The Edge of the Sea. Visitors can explore the one-quarter-acre tidal pool, picnic on the rocky shore, or conduct scientific studies, just like Carson did many years ago. The preserve also features a woodland area with blowdown trees, wetlands, streams, and even an upland pond that was dammed for ice harvesting.
The first 40 acres of this 78-acre preserve were donated to The Nature Conservancy in 1966, with additional acres donated in 1967. The preserve was dedicated to Rachel Carson in 1970, honoring her conservation efforts. Visitors can access the preserve by following Route 130 south from Damariscotta, turning left on Route 32 in New Harbor, and continuing for about one mile. Parking is available along the shoulder of the road, but visitors are encouraged to show courtesy to neighbors and return another time if the parking area is full.
The preserve offers a recreational beach accessed by granite steps from Route 32, as well as a hiking trail through the woods that leads to a .25-mile loop. Rachel Carson, a renowned biologist and author, was a founding member of The Nature Conservancy in Maine, and the preserve continues her legacy of science-based conservation.
Tidal marshes within the preserve play a crucial role in the aquatic food web and help protect cities and towns from coastal flooding. Additionally, the preserve is home to the remarkable return of alewives to Maine's rivers, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts in the area. Reviews of Rachel Carson Preserve
"Such a fun hidden gem! We spent about an hour just looking at all the birds near the salt pond after we took a puffin cruise that left from New Harbor. We then went back 2 other times during our vacation to see all the shorebirds again. Birders, stop if you have the time!"
"Went at low tide - lots of sea weed, snails, shrimp, and quarter sized crabs. Climbing over the rocks and looking around lasted about an hour of fun. Worth visiting"
"Fun place to stop and see what you can find while wading in the tide pool! Beautiful view too!"
"Beautiful salt pond at the edge of the sea (one inspiration for Rachel Carson's book). One of our favorite spots to explore! Make sure to go at high and low tide to experience the full beauty of the location. At low tide, you can explore the tide pools and climb the rocks to the point. Enjoy!"
"Knock your socks off views! A quiet little spot to relax, reflect and poke along the rocky beach. Or hike across the street in the wooded trails. Worth stopping, for sure."
