Camp Chewonki offers various programs, including backpacking trips through the wilderness, canoeing adventures on wild rivers, whitewater canoe trips, intermediate backpacking trips, and sea kayaking expeditions along the coast of Maine and Canada. Camp Chewonki hosts events for returning families, prospective families, alumni, and recent Summer staff. The camp also offers opportunities for alumni and friends to win sheep pelts and stay connected with the camp community. With grant-funded support from Governor Mill's Outdoor Learning Initiative, high school students from Maine have the opportunity to participate in outdoor education programs at Camp Chewonki.
Reviews
"There's no doubt that lots of kids have fun experiences here, but that was NOT the case with our daughter. We coordinated with our friends who had moved to Hawaii so that their daughter & our daughter could rekindle their best friendship for a few weeks over the summer at Camp Chewonki. The camp counselors thought they had a better idea, keeping the two friends separated for almost the entire stay to keep them from talking with each other too much. This hateful move left a VERY negative impression that has lasted for decades amongst all of us. Amazingly, we still get stuff in the mail from Camp Chewonki decades after two of our kids went there. I guess they're hoping we'll send our grandkids there? Not a chance."
"The camp was a piece of trash. They had limited food and my counselors were trash. If we had questions the counselors gave us a limit of 5 every day and this was for everyone. If you asked more than one they ignored you. The owners/runners of the camp were very friendly but over all there was a shortage of food, counselors were bad and I had a bad time."
"Chewonki creates memories that live a life a time. I remember going sea kayaking in Maine with my mentors Dylan and Karen last year. Visited lots of cool islands, camped, and went hiking along the way."
"I went there in '67' and '68' for the full summer camp. Each summer with 2 ten day wilderness trips. It is still one of the most rewarding, memorable, educational, valuable time of my life. It's expensive, even back then it was 2k for the summer 8wks, but like the butcher says "good meat is not cheap and cheap meat is not good". Luckily now there is financial assistance."
"my son has gone to the boys camp for 5 years and it is the highlight of his year! He absolutely loves it, and has learned so many great outdoor skills. He sails, kayaks, and his highlight is the 10 day wilderness trip they take. This is a great camp for the child who loves the outdoors and learning how to live responsibly in it -- Chewonki really stresses environmental responsibility also, so the kids learn to be cognizant of the "environmental footprint" they leave. It has been a great experience for him, and one he will likely continue for as long as he can."
