Reviews of Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge
"A weekly drive for my little family and I! There isn't a thing this place doesn't provide for an outdoor lover or a history buff. Plenty of pavement for bikes, rollerblades, skateboards, etc, as well as miles of trails surrounding the entrie base for leisure strolls to enjoy the protected wildlife around ponds and through streams (sometimes literally!). The history alone is enough to pull you in, though. Seeing all the old bunkers that were once filled with (alleged) nuclear bombs and other world war necessities, hidden away from the world in overgrowth in some small town at the top of Maine is eerily captivating. Its only purpose now is for the birds, and people like you, intrigued by its mystery."
"It's cool to see the old bunkers and stuff."
"There are trails you can access from outside the locked gate. The old bunkers and Bat Bunker are beyond the gate. The road closes from October to April/May for winter. So far in summer of 2023 the road has been closed every time I've gone and no one answers there numbers. Beautiful place... Especially when it's fully open. Worth the drive."
"An amazing oasis of information and keepsakes! We had an absolute pleasure visiting with the staff at this outpost. Facilities, information and a good gift selection it the middle of nowhere! The staff was amazing and very helpful. The facility was well kept and very clean. Outside there are many trails that are well marked and nicely maintained. We will be back!"
"Lots of trails to hike or snowshoe, pet friendly, they groom a cross country ski trail in winter, one of my favorite places"
