The sanctuary features over three miles of trails that wind through a variety of habitats including streams, tidal marshes, orchards, fields, and forests, making it ideal for hiking and cross-country skiing. Visitors can explore the Ridge Trail, Orchard and Deer Run Trails, Mill Stream Trail, and Estuary Trail to observe a wide range of wildlife such as shorebirds, songbirds, and resident mammals. The sanctuary is a conserved land that serves as a wildlife refuge, and visitors are encouraged to follow the rules and regulations to protect the natural environment. The name "Mast Landing" dates back to the early 1700s when the area was used to harvest ship masts from white pines. The sanctuary's history includes a saw mill, textile mill, grist mills, and woodworking shop, with remnants of these structures still visible. Maine Audubon founded Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary in 1967 on land donated by the L.M.C. Smith family, who played a key role in conserving Freeport's shore land. Maine Audubon's mission is to conserve Maine's wildlife and habitat through education, conservation, and action.

Reviews of Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary
"A lovely hike. No birds spotted, but peaceful!"
"Great kayak route to porters landing : start at high tide have car at other end"
"We took a two mile walk through the Audubon Sanctuary trails. Our walk followed a day of rain so there was some muddy spots. Some offered a boardwalk to cross so the trails were passable. It was a lovely walk through the pine forest. We were surprised that we didn't see any birds at all. All in all it was a very enjoyable walk. There are several trails to choose from offering varying distances from 0.4 miles up to over 3 miles."
"This is a beautiful place with great forests and moss logs then the added historical value makes it even more worth it. My only negative would be that the day I went was after a rain and some of the trail had lots of tall grass. In sure it's just earily in the season. Other than that nice place. It does have a coverd 2 table picnic area"
"Great little sanctuary for a walk. We made a big loop from our B&B (Kendall Tavern Inn), through the sanctuary and back into Freeport through Bow St. In Foliage season this is an absolutely beautiful walk and everyone on the way was super friendly."
