Frederick Douglass Unity House

The Frederick Douglass Unity House, located at 285 Old Westport Road in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, is a university institution established in 1995 as part of UMass Dartmouth's commitment to supporting its diverse student body. The Unity House provides a welcoming environment for ALANA students (African/Black, Latin@/Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American/Indigenous, and Allies), offering support for academic, cultural, recreational, and social activities.

Working in collaboration with the campus and community, the Frederick Douglass Unity House aims to empower and transform the student experience, with a focus on ALANA students, to promote lifelong learning. The mission of the Unity House is to create an inclusive environment that meets the academic, cultural, informational, and social needs of students, faculty, and staff of color.

The Unity House upholds the vision of universal justice and equality, as inspired by Frederick Douglass, and operates within the university's values of access, excellence, innovation, diversity, and public service. The institution fosters awareness and appreciation of African Diaspora identities, heritage, and cultures, while advocating for social justice and inclusiveness.

Through various programs, services, and cultural events, the Frederick Douglass Unity House educates the UMassD community, fosters a sense of shared responsibility and belonging, and encourages underrepresented students to take on leadership roles. The institution also facilitates difficult dialogues and collaborations with indigenous cultures, promoting diversity and inclusion in the fine arts.

The Unity House provides a safe and welcoming environment, free from risk and negativity, where students can engage in transformative experiences and develop their identities. With a focus on improving the student experience, the Unity House offers student-centered services, assistance, and interactions, aiming to enhance the overall campus community.

The institution also features a Computer Lab/Common Space open Monday through Thursday from 9am to 10pm, and Friday from 9am to 5pm. The Unity House is located in the Claire T. Carney Library, Office of Faculty Development, and can be accessed through the myUMassD web portal for email, notifications, services, and information.
