"Entering back into the work force after being on a hiatus for 4 years has been rewarding and stressful. I take care of my son pretty much full time by myself. Since my wife usually on the road for 2 months or more at a time, daily life as a special needs toddler parent falls on me. We decided to put Hendrix into daycare last Monday and well, it went terribly! The daycare we had him enrolled in was not equipped with the proper techniques or knowledge to take care of an Autistic toddler. My poor kiddo came home the first day puffy eyed, and exhausted from crying and being misunderstood for 8 hours. They had him in time out 5 times that day, he refused to eat all day, and they kept saying he couldn't understand them. My son is hyperverbal, and understands typical tasks very well. We talk to him like a person and explain things to him so he understands why he's been given a specific task. So of course I give them some better instruction on how to help with melt downs, and he goes the next day for a half day. Again, it goes terribly. He was put in time out 3 times, they didn't follow any of my direction, and he didn't eat, again! After I picked him up we ended up going to Wee Care Daycare. They initially said they were full. However they would call us as soon as a spot opened up. So we left and grabbed a bite to eat. Naturally, I'm distraught. I don't want to put my son in the care of people who are clearly unequipped, and risk causing psychological harm to my kid. At this time, I'm already working and THANKFULLY, I work from home. They've said numerous times that he's okay to be in the background. However, I know my son. There's no way I'll be able to keep him happy and content, AND work at the sametime. About an hour later I get a call from Wee Care. The woman who was working called the owner and explained our situation to her. What I said to the woman working didn't sit well with the owner and they were able to get him started tomorrow! So the next day we get him ready to go, and off he went! It was night and day. He didn't fuss, or cry, listened well, ATE HIS FOOD, and even layed down for quiet time. They spoke to him like a human, and used redirection when necessary and surprise! It worked! Moral of the story is, if your kid isn't thriving somewhere, there's a reason. Try a different approach. Unfortunately he caught a cold from the first daycare, and had to be home on Friday. He kept asking to go to school and see his friends. I think it's safe to say we found his perfect fit! Shout out to Wee Care Daycare for being such an amazing childcare program!"
