"Super cool spot to check out. Easy hike."
"I visited this site many times in the 1950s. The story goes that Hiram's father died in the dead of winter, and it was not possible to reach the cemetery, let alone dig a grave in the frozen ground. So they stored his body in the icehouse until the spring thaw. But when the spring came and they returned to the icehouse, they found his father's corpse floating in the water from the melted ice. Hiram was so upset by the sight that he swore this would never happen to him or his sister, Isabel. So he spent the next 50 years, chiseling out room inside a boulder for both him and his sister when their time came."
"Moderate 1/2 mile walk from the dirt road parking area. No signage, so look at a map first before you go because there will be no cell phone service. Wished there was more views, but the history is neat. My father-in-law told me that Hiram Smith’s family graves were washed away by large flood. So he craved out this giant bolder by hand to house him and his wife (who was full Native American) for their final resting place."
"Such a cool tomb out in the middle of the woods"
