"I have rented many vacation homes through VRBO, VACASA, Airbnb and local real estate companies and I have never written a negative review. This will be the first. I am writing this review so other travelers will know that what happened to us, could happen to them. I will note that I did not get the chance to stay in the house I rented through Sunset Island Sales and Rentals, so I cannot comment on the property. This is a review for the owner(s) and for Sunset Island Sales and Rentals. On May 31, 2022, I reserved a rental property with Sunset Island Sales and Rentals, through VRBO, with travel dates from September 23, 2022 to September 26, 2022. On May 31, 2022, I sent a message to the host through VRBO asking about parking and received an immediate response to my question. On September 14, 2022, I sent a message to the host asking about linens as I had noticed that a recent review mentioned there were no linens provided, which was not indicated in the VRBO listing. However, when I looked at the same property listing through the Sunset Island Sales and Rentals website, it clearly stated in bold that linens were not provided. I received no response from the host. On September 15, 2022, I sent a follow-up message through VRBO to the host and again received no response. On September 18, 2022, I attempted to call the host. As I was leaving a message, they texted me stating they were currently on the other line. I left a voicemail message and sent a follow-up text with my question about the linens. I never received a response from the host to the FOUR messages I left. On September 21, 2022, Eliana from Sunset Island Sales and Rentals contacted me to inform me that the homeowners of the Sunset Island development had decided to cancel all rentals for the weekend of our scheduled travel dates because of an unsanctioned car event (H2Oi) that was to take place in Ocean City on the weekend of our reservation, and the owners did not want anyone from the car event on their property. Well, our family was not traveling to Ocean City for a car event. We were traveling to Ocean City to attend a Memorial/Celebration of Life for my mother which had been planned for many months. We actually chose this property because it was located in a quiet, family friendly location. I had family traveling into Ocean City from California, Delaware, and Maryland to attend this event and now we had no place to stay. Eliana was very apologetic and tried to find another property; however, the only alternate property she had to offer was a 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom home that consisted primarily of twin beds, sleeper sofas, futons and/or bunk beds and was not acceptable for a party of 7 adults. I requested an immediate refund, which was processed. I then spent the next 24 hours trying to put together accommodations for my entire family while also finalizing the plans for my mother’s funeral. On September 23, 2022, my family traveled to Ocean City and had a beautiful celebration for my mother and the H2Oi car event never came to town. I understand that homeowners want to protect their investment when renting to travelers and the unexpected happens, but giving travelers only days notice when the reservation has been confirmed for months is not acceptable without providing notice and a “like-for-like” replacement. Also, not responding to travelers repeated attempts for information about a rental is not acceptable and has never been my experience in any other bookings through VRBO or other vacation rental agencies. This situation could have been handled differently, but it was not, and it caused so much added stress to an already stressful situation that I felt compelled to share my experience. In closing, I want to thank Eliana for her sincere apologies and efforts, but I will never rent through Sunset Island Sales and Rentals and I have spread the word to my network of family and friends to avoid these properties."
