Dentistry For Children

"Our experience is a while back, but it came to mind recently. My son, about 8 at the time, needed to have a baby tooth removed, as it has a fairly bad cavity. He was nervous but agreed. Sometime after he received the numbing, the young female dentist with blonde hair decided to pull the tooth. He was tensing and squirming and when she really went for it he was screaming - it was so traumatic. I was surprised they didn’t stop to check in with him. After the carnage , I told them “I’m pretty sure he felt that”, to which the dentist replied “no, it’s just pressure and it can frighten them”. First off, there is no way for her to know what level of pain or ‘pressure’ my son was feeling. But nothing to be done at that point. We obviously switched dentist after that. Then my son needed another baby tooth pulled, same reason. The dentist talked him through, always checking on what he was feeling, and the tooth came out with not even a wimper. The contrast of these experiences really angered me. I don’t know what pediatric dental school teaches the strategy of “get the job done even if the kid is screaming”, but I hope Denistry for Children can at least not allow this of their dentist. Do better. FYI, we switched to Rivertowns Pediatric Dentistry and they have taken great care of both my kids. Nice, trauma-free visits."

"I just wanted to take a moment to say....now that my girls are young adults and have moved on from Dr. Gary’s practice that we have had the best experience possible in the 17 or so years we’ve been going to his office. I can’t recommend him more highly. He is always available and his staff is great. A little anecdote...when my younger one was about two or three she slipped down some stairs and lost a baby tooth prematurely. We were in a panic (as new parents often are) and called Dr Gary after hours. He didn’t hesitate. He opened his office just for us and popped the tooth back in. Really amazing.
