Department of Oral Sciences

Welcome to the Department of Oral Sciences, located in the vibrant city of Dunedin, New Zealand. As one of the three departments within the esteemed University of Otago's Faculty of Dentistry, we are dedicated to advancing knowledge and excellence in oral health.

At the Department of Oral Sciences, we offer a comprehensive range of teaching and research opportunities. Our undergraduate programs provide students from all of the Faculty's programs with a solid foundation in oral sciences. At the graduate level, we offer courses of study and research leading to the prestigious degrees of Doctor of Clinical Dentistry and Master of Community Dentistry. We also provide postgraduate diplomas for those seeking to further their expertise in specific areas.

Our commitment to patient care is evident through our student clinics, where specialist staff provide exceptional care for referred patients from all over Otago. We also offer valuable advice to dental practitioners throughout New Zealand, ensuring the highest standards of dental care are upheld.

Research is at the heart of our department, and our dedicated staff and students collaborate with the renowned Sir John Walsh Research Institute (SJWRI). This state-of-the-art facility enables us to conduct groundbreaking research in molecular biology, oral immunology, cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry, clinical studies, and dental materials. With facilities for tissue culture and clinical research, we are able to explore new frontiers in oral health.

We are proud to host the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Dental Epidemiology and Public Health, further solidifying our commitment to improving oral health on a global scale.
