Welcome to Fresh Mushrooms, located at 48 Oakleigh Avenue in Takanini, New Zealand. Our establishment is a unique food store that specializes in providing fresh and high-quality mushrooms to our customers.

Out of the Dark Mushrooms, the family-owned institution behind Fresh Mushrooms, was founded by Phil Matheson in 2009. Inspired by his travels around the world, Phil discovered the cultivation of Oyster mushrooms on coffee grounds. Starting with Oyster mushrooms, Phil expanded his offerings to include Portobellos, Shiitake, and Enoki mushrooms as well.

Over the years, Out of the Dark Mushrooms has grown significantly and now operates from two sites in Mt Roskill and Kumeu. In 2018, the farming side of the business moved to glasshouses in Otahuhu, while the office remains in Takanini. Plans are currently underway to develop a purpose-built mushroom farming facility.

Today, Out of the Dark Mushrooms produces approximately one tonne of mushrooms per week, supplying 60% of their harvest to top restaurants such as Cocoro, Sid@the French Cafe, and Amano. They also provide mushrooms to My Food Bag and have recently expanded into supermarkets.

The growing popularity of mushrooms in New Zealand can be attributed to the changing culinary landscape influenced by global travel. Kiwis are now more experimental and open to new flavors and textures, which is reflected in the variety of mushrooms available on supermarket shelves.

At Fresh Mushrooms, we offer a diverse selection of mushrooms, including the popular Shiitake, Oyster, and Enoki varieties. Shiitake mushrooms, native to Asia, are widely used in cooking and are also valued for their medicinal properties. Oyster mushrooms, available in various colors, are known for their sweetness and versatility in different recipes. Enoki mushrooms, highly regarded in Japan, are delicate and have a unique flavor.

In addition to our main mushroom offerings, we also feature 'Aromatics' Wine Barrel Smoked Mushrooms, adding a smoky and aromatic twist to your culinary creations.
