About the Business
Welcome to Tanuki's Cave, Auckland's ultimate Japanese yakitori and kushiage bar located on Queen Street. As you enter our establishment, you will be greeted by the enticing aroma of grilling chicken, leading you down the stairs to our cozy little bar.
Although yakitori, which translates to 'grilled chicken', is our specialty, we offer a diverse range of meats, seafood, and vegetable dishes. Prepared on bamboo skewers, our yakitori is expertly grilled and basted with our unique in-house sauce or simply seasoned with salt. Indulge in the mouthwatering flavors of succulent chicken, tender beef, or fresh seafood, all lovingly cooked to perfection.
In addition to yakitori, we also showcase a delightful selection of Kushiage, which are bread-crumbed Cave favorites. From mashed Kumara coated in almonds to savory pork belly or shiitake mushrooms stuffed with chicken mince, these delectable treats are sure to satisfy your cravings.
To complement your dining experience, we offer an impressive assortment of Japanese sakes, including rare and exclusive varieties. Our genuine Japanese beers on tap and local craft beers provide the perfect accompaniment to your meal, ensuring you have a truly authentic Japanese dining experience.
For those seeking an intimate gathering, Tanuki's Cave offers "The Cage," a private seating area that can accommodate a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12 guests. This exclusive space allows you and your companions to enjoy a personalized dining experience.
Please note that while bookings are available for "The Cage," all other tables, including seating at the bar, operate on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage you to arrive early to secure your preferred spot and immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere.

"I would not highly recommend this place. We ordered a mushroom and leek and it came with you guessed it ONE single white button shroom cut into 4 pieces and put onto 2 sticks? I'm a bit confused on how this was a $6.50 dish, so I was a bit shocked and confused but it set me up for the rest of the meals which were also very tiny and pricey, it would be good if this was a restaurant but for a bar that barely has anything going on, and frankly quite boring, extremely expensive and not worth it, I would give it a lower review but the food wasn't bad but definitely not worth the money for me today, drinks felt on the weak side! Didn't expect them to taste watered down especially for a 14% alcoholic drink such as Plum wine. It was ok but I was quite dissapointed in my experience sorry"
"Visited the cave before our dinner booking at Tanuki restaurant. Place was humming, managed to get a standing side table near the wall. Great atmosphere and fantastic experience before our dinner reservation."
"A must try in Auckland. It feels like a tucked away yakitori bar in Japan, from the entrance, the atmosphere and the food. The skewers are great and I'm not one to like cheese stuffed foods but the chicken mince ball and others are great here. Other recommendations would be the wings, yakitori and the steak. Best spot is to sit at the bar but there's plenty of other seats around. The price is decent and in my opinion, worth the price per skewers. Ended up spending around $100 a head most recently."
"My friend and I went on a Thursday night, you know it's a great restaurant if it's packed even on a weekday. It's one of the hidden gems of Auckland. We ordered quite a variety from the menu and everything was delicious. My friend did make a mistake on ordering the mushroom with minced coated with breadcrumbs instead of the yakitori mushroom with minced so it wasn't what we expected but overall good taste. Loved the dessert especially. Highly recommended and will definitely return!"
"WOW! The food, the service, and the atmosphere; everything was amazing. The scotch fillet with butter was the best part as well as the legend 22 sake. The jelly sake was super yummy (it's basically alcoholic aloe vera drink). Highly recommend coming here but just watch how much you order as it adds up very quickly!"
