For those seeking an unforgettable hiking experience, the Ōrongorongo Track presents a captivating journey to Boar Inn Hut. Embark on a 2 hour and 30-minute walk, starting from the picnic area and toilet near the bridge. Follow the trail along the true left of the river, passing by the charming Raukawa Hut along the way.
To access Boar Inn Hut from the river, keep an eye out for a large orange triangle at the first bend downstream from Raukawa Hut. Alternatively, another orange triangle approximately 100 meters further downstream marks an alternative river access point. We advise checking the flow of the Ōrongorongo River before your adventure, as flash floods are common. It is important to avoid crossing the river during floods or after sustained rainfall in the area.
Be vigilant for signs that indicate an unsafe river condition, such as water flowing faster than walking pace, discolored water, debris in the river, or the sound of rocks rolling in the river bed. If you are uncertain about the safety of crossing, it is best to wait for the river to subside (which often happens quickly after rainfall ceases) or consider altering your plans and returning on another day.
To ensure your safety during river crossings, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the Mountain Safety Council river skills webpage, where you can learn valuable techniques for traversing rivers with confidence.
At Boar Inn Hut, we are dedicated to providing a memorable experience amidst the natural wonders of Wellington's stunning landscapes. Whether you are seeking a peaceful retreat or an exhilarating outdoor adventure, our institution promises to deliver an unforgettable journey. Book your stay with us today and embark on a remarkable exploration of New Zealand's captivating beauty.

"Easy tramp in from Catchpool carpark. Great place to take inexperienced people. The fire in the hut works well and will keep you warm if you are there during winter. You will need to collect wood though, but plenty can be found by the river"
"Great little hut, does get cold in the valley though so thermals aren't a bad idea. Plenty of plates, bowls, cups, cutlery and cookware provided. Little potbelly stove for cooking with but you'd be better bringing a little camping stove. Toilet paper is generally there but I wouldn't risk it, along with candles or some lighting. the long drop has been cleaned out! As everyone else who visits has noted, firewood can be a bit scarce or wet. Doc have dropped a load in which was a little damp so some has been dried and placed around the stove along with tinder and kindling... Should be all set to go for the next lot. Would be nice if others did the same otherwise you'll spend an hour or two getting a good fire going to heat water. Left more firestarters as well. Dont expect any cell service unless you head up the river bed previous to the hut. There's spotty reception up there in places."
"Great little place would be helpful if the fire wood is stocked up before you can get there as it's a mission looking for wood in the dark"
