About Remuera Kindergarten
Welcome to Remuera Kindergarten, located at 2 Wairua Road in Auckland, New Zealand. As an establishment and point of interest, we are proud to be a school that values strong relationships with both whānau (family) and the local community. These relationships have been nurtured over many years, creating a strong sense of whanaungatanga (connection) within our kindergarten.
At Remuera Kindergarten, we work in partnership with parents and whānau to ensure smooth transitions from home to kindergarten. We understand the importance of children's sense of belonging, and we strive to nurture this through positive relationships and interactions. Each child is respected as an individual, and we are responsive to the aspirations of their family. Parents trust us to provide an environment where their tamariki (children) learn to initiate and maintain relationships, develop empathy, and regard for others.
Family and community are at the heart of our kindergarten. Parents trust that we create an environment where respectful relationships, encouragement, warmth, acceptance, and aroha (love) are the norm. We foster a strong sense of culture, identity, and inclusion, affirming and extending links to the wider world. We have an open-door policy and encourage families to stay and be involved. Family events are enjoyed by all, creating a sense of community and togetherness.
Our curriculum reflects the holistic way in which children learn and grow - spiritually, emotionally, physically, and socially - through play. We believe that play is meaningful learning, and we see children as capable and confident learners who can actively participate in determining their own learning goals. Teachers support children by focusing on their strengths and interests, planning for future learning possibilities. We value children's culture, identity, and the contributions families make to enrich our program.
Self-regulation and resilience are important skills that we help children develop. Our teaching approaches and strategies support children in understanding, expressing, and regulating their emotions, building resilience and a sense of self-worth. We establish a positive atmosphere and reinforce positive behavior by noticing children's efforts and providing feedback and encouragement. Through our program, children develop social skills that enable them to establish and maintain friendships and participate in whanaungatanga relationships.
Empowerment is a key aspect of our curriculum. We want to empower children to learn and grow, encouraging learning dispositions such as creativity, curiosity, persistence, and growing independence. Children have agency and are encouraged to act on their ideas, developing knowledge and skills in areas that interest them. We believe that perspectives on empowerment are culturally located, so we seek the input of children, their parents, and whānau when designing the local curriculum.
Our bicultural practice is authentically woven through our daily practice. Children develop a sound knowledge and respect for te ao Māori (the Māori world) by acknowledging Māori tikanga (customs), values, and language. Our teachers weave together the principles and strands of our curriculum, Te Whāriki, in collaboration with parents, whānau, and the community.
Meaningful and child-focused assessment and planning documentation show how children's group and individual interests and strengths guide our program. We value children's ideas and parents' aspirations, which are evident in our teachers' planning. We view all children as successful learners with individual strengths and promote equity and successful inclusion for children with additional needs in a culturally responsive program.
At Remuera Kindergarten, children have fun and demonstrate enthusiasm for learning. They display confidence, belonging, and empathy towards others. We encourage their curiosity and independence, as well as their ability to share ideas and problem solve.
Our kindergarten hours are from Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, and our office hours are from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4:45 pm. We are closed during term breaks and public holidays.
