Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferries - Wellington
About the Business
Welcome to Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferries - Wellington! Located at 50 Waterloo Quay in Wellington, our establishment is a point of interest for both locals and visitors alike.
At Bluebridge, we pride ourselves on providing excellent service and convenience for all our customers. Our vehicle decks are spacious, allowing for easy accommodation of various vehicle types. Whether you have a sedan, hatch-back, coupe, sports car/convertible, people-mover, station wagon, SUV, off-roader, classic car, or 4x4, we have you covered. Height restrictions are not a concern, as long as you provide us with the correct length information for sufficient space.
For vehicles under 5.5m, we can accommodate flat deck, extended cab, and double cab utility vehicles, as well as 4x4s. If your vehicle is longer than 5.5m, we can still accommodate flat deck, extended cab, and double cab utility vehicles, as well as 4x4s. Additionally, we can accommodate both semi-bonnet/front-wheels forward and forward control/cab forward vans, including long wheel base vans.
If you're traveling in a campervan, rest assured that our ferries can accommodate these vehicles. Campervans are generally no larger than a standard van with sleeping accommodation, and may include limited toilet or kitchen facilities. We also welcome house buses, motorhomes shaped like a bus, and motorhomes built on a "cutaway van" chassis. These vehicles typically have a double or queen bed, living area, and toilet and kitchen facilities.
If you're towing a travel trailer with a truck/ute, we can accommodate you as well. Please provide the total length of your truck/ute and travel trailer when hitched.
Motorcycle enthusiasts are also welcome on board. We can accommodate motorcycles with 2 wheels, mopeds, motorbikes with one wheel at the front and two wheels at the rear, and motorbikes with two wheels at the front and one wheel at the rear. This category also includes motorbikes with sidecars.
For those traveling with trucks, we have categories for trucks under 2.5T and under 8m in length, as well as trucks between 2.5 and 3.5T and up to 8m in length. Anything over these weight or length restrictions should be booked through our freight booking office.
If you're traveling with equestrian vehicles or towed trailers/floats carrying horses, please ensure you book the correct length, including the hitch, to allocate enough space. Equestrian vehicles and towed trailers/floats can only travel under 2.5m swells, and hay and/or straw is considered a dangerous good and cannot be transported.
For those traveling in a caravan, we welcome you to join us on our ferry. A caravan is a vehicle equipped for living in, typically towed by a car.
Trailers of any kind, including those connected to motorbikes, can also be accommodated. Trailers under 2m in length are charged as 2m.
If you're a boat owner, we have trailers designed specifically for launching, retrieving, and carrying boats.
When you choose Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferries, you not only get to experience the stunning Cook Strait crossing, but you also get to enjoy our famous Kiwi hospitality. On board, you'll find a full cafe-style menu, free movies, free WiFi, and free activities for the kids. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey with us.

"Throughly enjoyed my experience in traveling with bluebridge and they will certainly be my first choice in interisland travel. The facilities are clean, tidy, and fresh. Staff are friendly and helpful. Real kiwi whanau vibe. The food was amazing, I recommend the crisp cooked chips and toasted sandwich or macaroni and cheese for lunch or the full english breakfast to start tour day. Passenger seating areas are limited but consistent with demand and not over packed. Dog friendly cabins and exercise areas are unique and welcoming. We did 3 trips over 2 days with vehicles and dogs, every trip met, or exceeded my expectations. The crew coordinating the vehicles onto the ship did well in providing directions, though we did get a bit confused with signage direction for vehicle checkin at wellington. Overall, I am certainly impressed with their service and would highly recommend bluebridge for interisland travel."
"It’s an easy convenient way to travel between islands. We had no delays or issues. The views during day and night travels are spectacular. We saw dolphins swimming & jumping along side us during the day and countless stars at night. I liked the ability to smoke during the trips. They have a variety of food & drinks to select from. The breakfast was adequate. Military style powdered eggs. Dinner had a few selections we ate the beef hot pot. The hot pot was ok but added some salt & pepper and it hit the spot. It was reasonably priced for what you got. The hot chocolate was great. The only thing I could really complain about was the lack of cleanliness in our cabin. There were broken chips on the wooden cabinet by the door, hair in the bathroom that wasn’t ours & definitely could’ve used a vacuum. However, all in all it was fit our needs and we made it work."
"We took the ferry to Picton (with vehicle check-in, and a cabin for $30). The staff were patient with us as we were new to this process. Many thanks to the blonde lady who assisted us on our morning ferry ride check-in on 5 May 2023. 3 1/2 hour ride. Comfortable cabin with hot shower, toilet, body soap and shampoo, side table, open cupboards to hang jackets and place bags, and 2 bunk beds. Beds were comfortable."
"After all the delays prior to Easter I was worried I'd have to go back home and fly, but apart from a 5hr delay it was a lovely day to sail. Smooth but windy. .. easy to book, easy to get to the port and easy to drive on board. Getting off was just as easy. Here's hoping my return trip will be as smooth."
"We enjoyed the two voyages very much. It was not cramped. I was treated well by the staff who saw I was elderly and walking badly. It was much appreciated. The scenery was beautiful."
