Newtown Athletics Stadium
About the Business
Welcome to Newtown Athletics Stadium, located in Wellington, New Zealand. This establishment, owned and maintained by Wellington City Council, is a point of interest for athletes and sports enthusiasts alike.
During the FIFA Women's World Cup Tournament, there will be limited access to the stadium. From June until the exclusive use period in July, athletes can still use the track but are requested to stay away from the field and grass areas. The track will remain open until the 6th of July, when both the track and fields will be closed to the public. We expect the track and fields to reopen on the 21st of August.
Access to the stadium is a privilege, not a right. Users must demonstrate respect and courtesy to other users, especially during the football season from April to September.
For individual access outside of Athletics Wellington's booked times during the summer season, a key fob is required. The electronic gate can be opened with a swipe fob, which can be purchased at the WCC Newtown Parks & Reserves Depot or obtained from a WCC library. The new locking system for the pedestrian gate is now operational.
Safety is a top priority, and no training is permitted within the fenced area surrounding the track during scheduled meets or competitions.
During the summer season, Athletics Wellington has priority for bookings between 1st October and 31st March. The facility is generally open during daylight hours throughout the summer. Booking requests for athletics-related events should be submitted to the Athletics Wellington office by 1st September.
Please note that separate booking requests can be made for different events. Weekdays throughout the season may have bookings from primary schools and college sports organizations, coordinated directly with Wellington City Council. Athletics Wellington aims to provide information about these bookings for the benefit of the athletics community, but the City Council remains the master source of booking information.
During the winter season, the Wellington Diamond United Football Club has priority for bookings between 1st April and 30th September, especially on weekends. The arena may not always be open during this period. Athletes wishing to use the facility during winter can apply to the Wellington City Council for a key to the pedestrian gate. It is important to respect other users and acknowledge that priority is given to the Football Club during the winter season.
We invite you to explore Newtown Athletics Stadium and enjoy the facilities it offers. Whether you are an athlete or a spectator, this institution provides a valuable resource for the Wellington community.

Reviews
"A multi-purpose stadium used primarily for athletics in the summer season and football in the winter. The all-weather athletics track is one of only two in the southern part of the North Island, and the venue is capable of hosting international level athletics meets."
"Nicely sheltered. Stadium needs a spruce up"
"Good little stadium and athletics facility. The running track is a good quality surface, and there are various other things like shotput and discus areas and long jump pits. The stands are simple but they work. There's good wheelchair access too."
"A wonderful multi use sports ground with two quality grass football fields, a 440m running track and other track and field events. The grandstand has shelter from the weather and good changing rooms."
"Very good facilities with a small grandstand. Athletics track in very good order. The football pitch is one of the best natural turfs in wellington. Possibly the best. Next to the zoo with a fine Cafe."
