Huia Filter Station

Welcome to the Huia Filter Station, located at Woodlands Park Road in Auckland, New Zealand. Our establishment is a point of interest and a vital part of Auckland's metropolitan water supply network.

Planning is currently underway to build a replacement water treatment plant and two storage reservoirs in Waima, west Auckland. This project is necessary as the existing plant, built in 1928, is reaching the end of its operational life. The new treatment plant will ensure the continued resilience of Auckland's water supply network, serving the needs of approximately 300,000 Aucklanders, which accounts for around 20 percent of the city's water demand.

The new plant will utilize water from four dams in the Waitakere Ranges, just like the existing plant. By increasing the volume of water stored locally, the reservoirs will enhance the overall resilience of the water network and accommodate daily demand fluctuations.

In addition to replacing the aging plant, the new Huia Water Treatment Plant will offer more advanced treatment processes and be easier to maintain. The layout of the plant has been carefully designed to ensure the safety and accessibility of staff to each treatment process.

We own the land on which the new plant will be built, and it has been designated for water supply purposes since 1972. Subject to Auckland Council's review and comments on our plan of works outline, we have the authorization to construct a water treatment plant and reservoirs at any time.

During the resource consent process, we received 497 submissions, with eight being neutral, 20 in support of the project, and 469 opposed to the application. However, after extensive sampling for Kauri Dieback, resource consents were granted with conditions. We have refined our methodology to minimize any risk of movement of Kauri Dieback from the site.
