Welcome to Wellington Museum, located at Jervois Quay in the heart of Wellington, New Zealand. Step back in time as you enter the historic Bond Store, a 19th-century bonded cargo warehouse that now houses our museum. Immerse yourself in the rich stories of Wellington's past, inspired by its natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Our exhibition is a playful and poignant exploration of Wellington's people, art, and environment. Discover treasures from our collection, including toi (art) and taonga (treasures), and engage in interactive activities for tamariki (children). A large-scale timeline takes you on a journey through significant Wellington events, from the ancient Polynesian navigator Kupe to the present-day challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Maritime history comes to life as you enter the Jack's Boathouse exhibit, where you can steer ships and experience life on board. Learn about the iconic Pōneke dog, Paddy the Wanderer, and delve into the nautical world of sailors, explorers, and seafarers.
In the Wahine Theatre, experience the emotive account of the 1968 Wahine disaster, as told by renowned filmmaker Gaylene Preston. Step into the grand Von Kohorn Room, once the boardroom of the powerful Wellington Harbour Board, and listen to historical accounts of momentous decisions, including the declaration of Pōneke as the first nuclear-free port in Aotearoa.
Ngā Heke exhibition invites you to explore different perspectives and alternative histories, showcasing our most prized taonga and contemporary works from Māori artists and poets. A Millennium Ago transports you to the realm of Māori creation legends through intriguing theatrical techniques.
The Attic is a space where the weird, worrisome, and wonderful stories of Wellington's history take center stage. This steampunk-styled exhibit space will captivate your curiosity, with fantastical creations and the opportunity to time-travel. Don't miss Ngā Hau, a time machine that breathes life into Wellington's history, taking you on a captivating journey.
Learn about the architectural significance of the museum in the Frederick de Jersey Clere Room, dedicated to the English-born architect who designed the Bond Store. Explore the planning and design of the building and view its original blueprints.
