For a touch of history, visit Truby King House and Garden, a heritage-listed estate nestled in Melrose. This estate was once home to Sir Truby and Lady Isabella King, the founders of the Plunket Society. Explore the enchanting garden beds, stroll along the brick paths and archways, and catch a glimpse of the sea below.
Did you know that our garden has a fascinating past? Originally, it served as a site for Māori burials from the time of their settlement of Te Whanganui-a-Tara. From 1840, the cemetery began European burials, making it Wellington's oldest European cemetery. Many of early Wellington's notable figures are laid to rest here. Take a peaceful and historically intriguing escape from the city as you explore the cemetery, just minutes away from the center. Don't miss our heritage rose collection, inspired by the original graveside plantings, which bloom in all their glory from November to December.
We invite you to visit Wellington Botanic Garden and experience the beauty, tranquility, and history that our institution has to offer. Mark your calendars from April 21st to September 15th for a memorable journey into nature's wonders.

Reviews of Wellington Botanic Garden
"Wellington Botanical Garden is exceptional. Its beautifully curated plant life, impeccable maintenance, and enjoyable cable car ride make it the best botanical garden I've ever visited. Absolutely a must-see in Wellington!"
"Very pretty but wish there had been more and better signage. It felt like the map did not have the same trail names. In the greenhouses, some information on the plant names or types would have been appreciated."
"Great place to walk around and have some good fresh breeze of air. There is a lot of place to explore within the gardens. Lots of big trees and flowers all around its a good view to walk. The cable car and planetarium with gallery are also fun to be."
"Beautiful flowers and plants. It's such a fabulous idea to take the cable car from the top and then take a walk down the Botanical Gardens. If you have kids, there is a lovely playground on the way down. A short walk about 10 minutes or so to the Parliament house. Then back to rest of the city for our rest at the hotel."
