Hugo's Bistro
About the Business
Welcome to Hugo's Bistro, a charming establishment located in the heart of Auckland CBD's bustling business district. As a true all-day dining destination, we offer a variety of culinary experiences from early morning coffee to sophisticated European-inspired evening fare.
Our focus is on using beautiful ingredients, sourced from exceptional New Zealand producers, and thoughtfully preparing them over our open charcoal fire. This lighter style of classical cooking allows the flavors of the ingredients to shine through.
Step into our historic Shortland Street dining room and be transported to a world of luxury and subtlety. Whether you're looking for a morning perch to enjoy exceptional coffee or a cozy nook for an intimate dinner, we have the perfect spot for you.
At the helm of our kitchen is the talented chef Alex Llewellyn, who brings a wealth of experience from New Zealand, New Zealand, and Japan. With a background that includes working at renowned restaurants such as Sails Restaurant, North Bondi Italian, and Ester, Alex's cooking style is influenced by regionality and a passion for sustainable produce.
For a truly immersive dining experience, book a seat at our kitchen bar and witness the brilliance of Hugo's team of chefs up close. Our restaurant can accommodate 38 people at tables and an additional 18 at the bar.
Please note that we are closed to the public on weekends, but we are more than happy to work with you and your budget to create a shared banquet or a special menu exclusive to you and your guests.
Convenient parking is available on Shortland Street (pay and display) or in the Tournament parking building next door.

"Smallest 'large' coffee I've ever seen. Food was OK, not much of it so the breakfast menu very underwhelming. Bacon sandwich was literally just a burger bun with couple bits of bacon and bbqsauce - def paying for the interior design not the food. We were greeted by nice lady but young waitress was very dour, would be much nicer if she learnt to smile. They also add the surcharge for credit cards and paywave."
"One of the best dining experiences we've had - better than most fine-dining as well. Outstanding service, the Maître d' was amazing, and perfectly interjected at the right times, made us feel welcome and perfectly recommended something for us to get started... The drinks were perfect, and we didn't even get to the wines! Amazing, and we'll be back again for sure, plenty of other menu options we wanted to try, so will be going back to try them all soon!"
"A consistently excellent inner city bistro for weekday eats, with super friendly reliable service from well-informed staff. If you ever can’t think of anywhere to go for dinner or a nice lunch, this is the place. Make sure to scroll to see the top notch parfait and the orange tart for dessert. A must have dish that I wait all year round for, is the venison. The whole fit out is very comfortable and perfect for colder and wetter days like these"
"Our host and waiter was very friendly and honest. Food was delicious, specially the parmesan fried croquettes. Very chic setup. The chocolate mousse dessert is a must. The venison and the market fish were very tasty too. Not cheap but worth it for a special occasion."
"Food: (10/10) Entrees: we had the anchovies & sourdough and duck liver parfait. Both were pretty good! The sourdough was so moist inside. Mains: Ricotta gnocchi was fabulous. The basil, Parmesan and gnocchi all together were heaven. The sauce is legit 10/10. Literally the BEST! The Wapiti was succulent and juicy. Dessert: we had the olive oil semifreddo but it tasted quite interesting. The ice cream was sweet but it didn’t balance out the acidity of the mandarin granita. Service: (10/10) Staff were super friendly and attentive!"
