NZEI Te Riu Roa
About the Business
Welcome to NZEI Te Riu Roa, the most powerful education union in Aotearoa. Located on Boulcott Street in Wellington, our institution is a point of interest for education professionals who are passionate about fighting for a fairer education sector.
As a member of NZEI Te Riu Roa, you become part of a powerful collective. Together, we work towards creating a better education sector for kaiako (teachers), ākonga (students), and everyone involved in preparing our tamariki (children) for the future.
Through our unity, we have already made meaningful change in the education sector. Our collective efforts have resulted in fairer pay, improved working conditions, and greater support both inside and outside the classroom. Take a moment to explore the achievements we have made together.
However, there is still work to be done. Tamariki in Aotearoa are missing out on essential learning support due to underfunding. By joining NZEI Te Riu Roa, you can help us push the government to increase funding, ensuring that every child feels connected, supported, and valued in their school or early childhood education.
Furthermore, we believe that early childhood teachers deserve fair pay. Currently, their salaries are up to 52% behind those of kindergarten and primary teachers, despite having the same skills, qualifications, and responsibilities. We urge the government to address this gap and take action now.
Additionally, we recognize the vital role of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in our education system. By preparing future teachers with the knowledge and skills they need to begin teaching, ITE plays a crucial part in shaping the future of education.
Our school leaders also deserve better. With long work weeks, demanding expectations, and a lack of proper support networks, we advocate for improved conditions and resources for these dedicated individuals.
At NZEI Te Riu Roa, we are committed to creating a fairer, better resourced primary education sector. In 2019, we took significant steps towards this goal, but there is still more work to be done.
We also acknowledge the incredible skills and experience that Kōhanga Reo kaimahi (early childhood educators) bring to the important kaupapa (cause) for tamariki Māori. However, many kaimahi are not currently paid in a way that recognizes their value and upholds their mana (prestige). It is crucial that we address this issue and ensure fair compensation for their invaluable work.
To support our members, our dedicated member advisory officers are available between 8:30am and 5:00pm. They can assist with any queries related to pay, subscription rates, and employment disputes.
Join us at NZEI Te Riu Roa and be part of the movement for a fairer and more equitable education sector. Together, we can make a difference. This webpage is authorized by Stephanie Mills, National Secretary, and located at 79 Boulcott Street, Wellington 6011.

"I cannot stand by a union that does not stand by the people that it is supposed to stand up for. I pay over $25 each pay and for what? It stood by a government mandate that will attempt to rob us on our human rights and did not consult union members regarding this. I'm not anti-vax, I choose my right to freedom of choice and it is to get the Nova-vax vaccine which arrives early 2022. Do not join NZEI, they will not be there when you need them and do not work for you and the money you put into them. Shameful!!!"
