Boat Café
About the Business
Welcome to Boat Café, the iconic floating restaurant located at 139A Oriental Parade in Wellington, New Zealand. This establishment is not your ordinary restaurant, as it is housed in a classic steam tug with a rich history.
Originally named the Aucklander, this remarkable vessel was delivered all the way from Scotland to Auckland in 1958. For many years, she served as a hardworking tugboat, towing and handling ships around the bustling Auckland port. However, as technology advanced, she was eventually replaced by more modern engines.
In 1986, a visionary Wellington businessman named Clem Griffiths recognized the potential of this historic tugboat and purchased her to establish Wellington's first and only floating restaurant. After a thoughtful renaming to Tapuhi II, the "Tugboat on the Bay" restaurant opened its doors to the public in 1992, captivating locals and visitors alike with its unique dining experience.
Over the years, Tapuhi II has undergone various changes and renovations, but she remains a proud and cherished part of Wellington's maritime heritage. Today, under new management, Boat Café aims to continue the tradition of providing friendly service, delectable food, and breathtaking views of the harbor.

Reviews
"Spent a few days in Wellington, stayed across the road from the boat cafe so far to go for breakfast, I loved the idea of breakfast on a boat. The decor was a bit rustic with a real need to fix the windows but the pancakes were delicious, will come again"
"Nothing special. Average place and average taste. Nothing too amazing. Had fish and chips. Taste was fine. Not too good but not too bad either."
"Our usual go-to lunch restaurant when visiting Wellington’s Oriental Bay, but NO MORE!! Disgusting old chips refried for the umpteenth time. Fish was just as bad having been fried in old oil!! When we complained, the waitress said she would bring us a fresh batch of chips. FRESH??? Then she said fresh oil was used. Look at the photos."
"Nothing fancy just just good food and a neat atmosphere. We had lamb and fish burgers which were very nice, the portion of fries was a little small, but the burger was a little large, so it works. Staff was friendly and helpful even on a quiet Monday evening."
