Toowoomba Waterbird Habitat 10 Waterbird Drive, Rangeville, Queensland 4350
About the Business
Welcome to the Toowoomba Waterbird Habitat, a stunning 19-acre natural habitat and park located in Rangeville, Australia. This establishment is a must-visit for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city.
Designed to mimic natural wetlands, our park features multiple lake formations, including three permanent lakes and a shallow lagoon. These diverse habitats provide the perfect environment for waterbirds to feed, roost, and nest. You'll find large areas of grassland, mud-banks, deep and shallow lakes, as well as areas of reeds and islands, all contributing to the beauty and functionality of this unique habitat.
The park's central pond, mature trees, and walkways that circumnavigate the lake offer a picturesque setting for walking, jogging, and picnics. As you explore the park, you'll come across informational boards that provide interesting insights into the local wildlife and flora. For an excellent vantage point to view the waterbirds, make sure to visit our viewing deck and boardwalk, which takes you over the main lake.
Toowoomba Waterbird Habitat is home to a wide variety of native plants and trees, as well as a diverse range of wildlife, including waterbirds, fish, turtles, and insects. The natural habitat area is situated at the eastern end of the park, marked by the lake. The entire habitat is fenced to protect the birds and prevent domestic animals from entering, ensuring a safe refuge for the many different species of waterbirds. Buffer plantings around the perimeter of the park also provide protection for the wildlife from surrounding roads and residential areas.
Throughout the park, you'll have the opportunity to spot numerous bird species, including ibises, herons, maned ducks, and straw-necked ibises. The wetland is also home to native rushes, reeds, sedges, and other aquatic plants, creating a thriving ecosystem for fish, turtles, and insects. Additionally, native plants such as paperbarks, kangaroo grass, and eucalypts provide food and shelter for native animals.
Our series of lakes, with both deep and shallow areas, offer a wetland-style habitat for the wildlife. The island refuges within the lakes provide nesting and roosting sites for waterbirds. The deep water is suitable for various duck species, cormorants, coots, and grebes, while the shallow areas along the western shore attract large waders like ibises, herons, and egrets. The middle lake and lagoon are shallow and reedy, providing additional feeding areas.
One of the unique features of our lakes is that they are spring-fed, ensuring a permanent water source for the plants and wildlife. This allows for the growth of plants that are specifically adapted to these conditions. The mud banks within the habitat play a crucial role in the food chain. When water levels drop, the exposed mud-banks become feeding areas for small waders. When the water levels rise again, decaying vegetation releases organic nutrients that feed algae, plants, and small insect populations, providing another food source for waterbirds.
The Toowoomba Waterbird Habitat holds both natural and cultural significance. As part of the Australian Bicentennial Celebrations in 1988, the Toowoomba City Council collaborated with various organizations and individuals to establish this habitat. It serves as a commemorative project, attracting a variety of waterbirds, preserving the swamp habitat, aiding in flood mitigation, and promoting public recreation and education on native flora and fauna. Additionally, this area holds a piece of Toowoomba's cultural heritage, as it was once home to market gardens in the late 19th century. You can even find a restored well used by Chinese market gardeners near the middle lake.
Please note that feeding the wildlife is discouraged, and dogs are not permitted in the park. We invite you to visit the Toowoomba Waterbird Habitat and immerse yourself in the beauty of this natural oasis. Explore the diverse habitats, observe the incredible birdlife, and enjoy the tranquility of this remarkable park.

"Beautiful park well and maintained. The large signs are very informative though they “no feeding birds bread” part may need to be more noticeable since we saw others feeding the birds bread. Toilets available and a cute little walk through of plants for butterflies was very nice. I also enjoyed seeing the small recently planted trees around and love that some of the plants are labeled."
"A good place to visit a watch the birds while you gather thoughts. It was very peaceful listening to the bird calls. I did see some egrets mixed in. I was lucky enough to see some baby Eurasian Coots. There are also an assortment of ducks. It did feels like that there were a few too many ibis."
"Loved this park ! It was such a delight coming here and having a nice walk."
"More ibises than I expected! Parking could be more obvious. Very well maintained, clearly cared for. Nice, out of the way location."
"Lovely afternoon for a stroll - and a surprisingly attractive duck came to see us! A beautiful place."
