Welcome to the Notley Fern Gorge State Reserve, a stunning establishment located near the picturesque Tamar Valley in northern Tasmania, Australia. This hidden gem is a must-visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
Immerse yourself in the lush beauty of this ancient rainforest, where towering trees, vibrant ferns, and delicate moss create a mesmerizing landscape. As you wander through the forest, you'll be surrounded by the majestic presence of towering trees, creating a truly awe-inspiring experience.
While the Notley Fern Gorge State Reserve is a popular day trip for locals in Launceston, it is also a destination worth discovering for visitors from afar. We believe that the most rewarding travel experiences often lie in the hidden gems that are cherished by the locals. And this reserve is undoubtedly one of them.
As you explore the reserve, you'll encounter the dominant eucalyptus trees that tower above the rainforest understory, showcasing the unique woodland ecosystem. Keep an eye out for 'Bradey's Tree,' a burnt-out tree that holds historical significance, as it is believed to have been a hiding spot for a notorious bushranger from the 1820s.
The reserve offers a 45-minute walk that requires moderate fitness, featuring creek crossings and a challenging uphill climb on the return journey. The track consists of boardwalks, natural paths, and steps with moderate inclines, ensuring an exhilarating adventure for all. Along the way, informative signs provide fascinating insights into the diverse species of trees and ferns that call this area home.
While exploring the reserve, you'll have the opportunity to observe native birdlife, including pink robins and golden whistlers, while learning about the abundant flora and fauna through information stands scattered throughout the area. At dusk, nocturnal animals such as Bennetts wallabies, Tasmanian devils, and ringtail possums come alive, adding another layer of enchantment to your visit. Don't forget to marvel at the impressive tree ferns, hard water ferns along the creek's bank, and filmy ferns that adorn the tree trunks.
After your forest trek, take advantage of the picnic and grilling area to relax and rejuvenate amidst the serene surroundings. Enjoy a delicious meal while soaking in the tranquility of the reserve, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Located just a 30-minute drive from Launceston, reaching the Notley Fern Gorge State Reserve is a breeze. Simply take the West Tamar Highway North out of Launceston, then turn left onto Bridgenorth Road at Legana, followed by a right onto Notley Gorge Road.

Reviews of Notley Fern Gorge State Reserve
"A magnificent piece of remnant rainforest only half an hour from Launceston. A magical short walk, superbly quiet and restful for the soul."
"Wonderful place to visit, not for wheel chairs tho sadly. As it has a steep decline into the forest and then bridges and board walks then a steep up hill slope at the end of the circuit with stairs. Any age can do it with enough brakes or a fit person could attempt it very easily, i'm not as fit as my girlfriend who was always in front and didn't seem so puffed by the end but i was and sweating on a hot day so ensure to bring water on your journey! (Sssh definitely wasn't drinking a refreshing beverage at the bottom)"
"Great 1hour walk around in a gully! For people who have not good balance it be good to take walking sticks to give u aid. It descends down a gully and ascends back up. Some of the track is pathed and other parts are bush walking tracks. Well maintained and enjoyable. Even saw pendamelons and I know I spelt it wrong but saw a few on the walk was worth going to"
"Unparalleled forest walk, right up there with Cradle Mountain. Magnificent! Beat kept secret of Launceston and not a soul in sight. Forest bathing at its best."
"Arrived at 6am in the morning so we basically had the whole place to ourselves. It's quiet and really calming, a very nice walk and Brady's tree was stunning! (Lots of spider webs inside though haha) it might have been raining the day before so the path was a bit muddy. Great experience and there are plenty of signs about different ferns along the way."
