Established in 2011 through a partnership between Charles Darwin University (CDU) and the Northern Territory Government (NTG), the Northern Institute has grown to become a major "think tank" in Australia's north. Under the leadership of Professor Ruth Wallace, we have become a recognized hub for research expertise and training.
Our research is driven by a deep understanding of the strengths and challenges faced by our partners and communities. We tackle the complex issues that affect regional and remote areas, delivering accurate and sometimes challenging analysis for communities, government, and industry. We believe in co-designing our research to ensure that the voices of those often unheard are strengthened, and that our evidence is contextually meaningful for effective decision making.
Our researchers and students are dedicated to making a social impact and conducting work of excellence and relevance. We strive to enhance the capacity of mental health service providers supporting Yolgnu patients through culturally sensitive practices. We are proud to have one of our researchers chosen for the prestigious ABC Top 5 Science media residency. And we applaud the achievements of our alumni from the Pathways to Politics Program for Women as they lead campaigns for positive change.
At the Northern Institute, we acknowledge and respect the Traditional Owners of the Country on which we live and work, recognizing their ongoing connection to communities, land, and waters. We pay our respects to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and elders, past and present. We support the Uluru Statement from the Heart and endorse the enshrining of a First Nation's Voice to Parliament in the Australian Constitution.
Visit our Research Support Services located on the beautiful Larrakia Land at CDU Casuarina Campus. Learn more about Larrakia Nation, the Saltwater People, and their rich cultural heritage. Please note that as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person, this website and its linked publications may contain images and names of people who have passed away.
Charles Darwin University also acknowledges the traditional custodians across the lands on which we live and work, paying our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging. The Northern Institute is a CRICOS Provider (No: 00300K), RTO Provider (No: 0373), and TEQSA Provider (ID PRV12069).
