UniSQ Japanese Garden QLD Toowoomba City, Queensland 4350
About the Business
Welcome to UniSQ Japanese Garden QLD, a serene and captivating oasis nestled in the heart of Toowoomba City, Queensland. This enchanting establishment is not just a park or a point of interest, but a true tourist attraction that will transport you to the tranquil beauty of Japan.
The Japanese Garden, lovingly known as 'Ju Raku En', meaning 'to enjoy peace and longevity in a public place', was officially opened on 21 April 1989 by Mr Yoshiharu Araki from the Brisbane Consul-General of Japan. Spanning over three hectares on the northern side of UniSQ Toowoomba, this exquisite garden is jointly owned by UniSQ and the Toowoomba Regional Council.
With its stunning natural surroundings and meticulously designed features, the Ju Raku En Japanese Garden has become a sought-after venue for weddings. Imagine exchanging vows under the delicate lilac blossoms of the Wisteria Pergola during the enchanting spring season. Alternatively, couples can choose to say "I do" in front of the mesmerizing waterfall or under the intimate ambiance of the Viewing Pavilion on one of the islands.
As one of Australia's largest and most traditionally designed Japanese stroll gardens, Ju Raku En is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of Japanese garden design. However, this garden is a work in progress, with many years ahead to reach its full potential. The master plan and design were meticulously prepared in Japan by the knowledgeable staff of the Nakane Garden Research, ensuring an authentic and immersive experience. Construction began in 1983 after three years of careful planning.
The essence of Japanese gardens lies in the intricate use of rocks to create three-dimensional stone pictures. In Ju Raku En, every large rock has been thoughtfully placed by the garden's designer, Professor Kinsaku Nakane of Kyoto, to appear naturally scattered in a seemingly random manner. As you wander through the garden, you'll feel a sense of harmony and serenity, surrounded by the meticulously manicured landscapes and captivating rock formations.
Ju Raku En is a visual representation of a Buddhist paradise, with the celestial sea (the lake) gently caressing the rocky shores of the three islands believed to be inhabited by immortals. The outer edge of the lake symbolizes the material world, and crossing one of the four bridges to the islands creates a symbolic journey to paradise.
At the University of Southern Queensland, we acknowledge and honor the First Nations of southern Queensland and their enduring connection to Country, lands, and waterways. In short, the USQ Japanese Garden is a hidden gem that's worth a visit for anyone seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of city life."
"It's looking a little tired but perhaps that's part of an autumn visit. A sign said the pond was polluted and to keep away. Didn't see a turtle but lots of ducks, Ibis (of course) and other birds. The pebble garden was uncared for. Crafted sections of the garden are tidy, and the bamboo stands impressive. A peaceful walk on the gravelled paths was relaxing, and the water installations were calming."
"Japanese Gardens is my favourite place in Toowoomba. So serene and peaceful. It's also great for the whole family."
"Very beautiful Japanese garden designed and constructed under the supervision of a traditional Japanese Gardening master. Extensive series of ponds bridges and garden beds. Beautiful views across the ponds taking in the gardens and bridges. Would offer seasonal variations in colours and blooms."
