Hartley's Crocodile Adventures
Captain Cook Highway, Wangetti, Queensland, Australia
About Hartley's Crocodile Adventures
Welcome to Hartley's Crocodile Adventures, one of the oldest and most renowned tourist attractions in the Cairns region of Australia. Our establishment, located in Wangetti on the Captain Cook Highway, is a must-visit point of interest for both locals and tourists alike. Operating since 1934, Hartley's has a rich history that began as a humble tea house catering to tired motorists traveling between Cairns and Mossman.
Legend has it that Pop Evans, the original owner, entertained visitors by feeding Charlie, the resident crocodile, while scones cooked in the wood stove. Pop Evans became the first person in Australia to perform crocodile shows for the public. Today, our world-famous Crocodile Attack Show, which has been running for 88 years, continues to captivate audiences.
Hartley's holds the distinction of being the first place in Australia to successfully breed crocodiles in captivity. Our efforts in crocodile conservation attracted global interest, and documentaries produced at Hartley's played a significant role in raising public awareness and support for crocodile conservation. As a result, wild crocodiles were granted protection in 1974.
Since its establishment, Hartley's has earned a reputation as one of north Queensland's premier attractions. In 1987, the zoo was renovated by the Freeman family, and in 2002, the brand new Hartley's Crocodile Adventures opened just 500m south of Hartley's Creek. This eco-attraction offers authentic crocodile experiences in a sustainable environment.
Over the past two decades, Hartley's Crocodile Adventures has continued to expand, providing visitors with innovative and up-close wildlife encounters. We regularly introduce new wildlife displays to ensure a fresh and exciting experience for our guests. Our commitment to excellence has been recognized with numerous awards for tourism achievements and ground-breaking architecture.
When you visit Hartley's, you can enjoy a range of activities and shows throughout the day. Join our Crocodile Farm Tour, witness the Cassowary Feeding, be amazed by the Snake Show, and experience the thrilling Crocodile Attack Show. Additional wildlife presentations may be scheduled during busy periods, so be sure to check the blackboard at Admissions upon arrival.
If you prefer a more leisurely experience, take a stroll along our 2500 meters of boardwalks and pathways, which wind through the Melaleuca Wetlands, Eucalypt Woodland, and Riverine Rainforest. Along the way, you'll encounter a diverse range of native and exotic animals, including the Komodo Dragon, Alligators, Cassowaries, Wombats, Koalas, Emus, Lizards, Kangaroos, and Wallabies.
Please note that capacity limits apply to the Gallery of Living Art - Reptile Display. We do not take bookings for boat cruises; instead, your boat time will be allocated upon arrival. The boat cruise lasts approximately 20 minutes and offers a unique perspective on our stunning surroundings.
At Hartley's Crocodile Adventures, we strive to provide an authentic wildlife experience that leaves a lasting impression. With over 3,000 reviews and an average rating of 4.5 stars, there is no question that we are on the right track. Come and join us for a day filled with adventure, education, and unforgettable memories.

Reviews of Hartley's Crocodile Adventures
"Fantastic park, definitely allow at least 4 or 5 hours here! Boat trip and all of the talks/shows are conducted by educational and engaging guides, we had a great time. You can feed the kangaroos for no extra cost, they are very friendly and even allow you to pat them gently. Would highly recommend. The cafe has a huge variety of freshly prepared food available too"
"Visited Hartley's with family and had a great time. Plenty to do throughout the day both in the morning and afternoon as live talks happen pretty much every hour. Really interactive experience with the animals even getting the chance to get up close with animals like the kangaroo, koala and a few others. The food is pretty decent as well so if you're there most of the day there's plenty to choose from. Highly recommend this place for anyone in the area or even staying in Cairns for a few days. Tickets are reasonably priced and well worth it."
"Loved it!!! The salties were great...and they had koalas, emu, wombat, many birds, lizards and more. The shows were fun and entertaining. The crocodile skewers were fantastic. Wide menu range for lunch"
"I had an absolutely fantastic time at Hartley's Crocodile Adventure! The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the mesmerizing crocodile show. To make the experience even more memorable, my friends and I opted for the Breakfast with Koala package, which turned out to be an excellent choice. The package included a delightful breakfast in the morning, and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to not only pat but also take photos with the adorable koalas. The entire experience was truly enchanting, and I wholeheartedly recommend Hartley's Crocodile Adventure to anyone seeking a thrilling and interactive wildlife encounter."
"Such a great day out for the family, and what a lot to see, learn and experience. We saw well over 50 crocs over our visit and so many other animals and birds. The boat ride was also really cool. The staff are full of knowledge and very friendly."
