Restaurant 1889 at The Brewery
About the Business
Welcome to Restaurant 1889 at The Brewery, a unique and historic dining experience located in Townsville City, Flinders Street. If you're looking for something a bit more upmarket, our restaurant is the perfect choice. Nestled inside the Brewpub, Restaurant 1889 blurs the line between traditional bistro and fine dining establishment, offering a sophisticated yet approachable atmosphere.
Originally built as the Townsville Post & Telegraph Office in 1886, our establishment is a stunning example of late Victorian architecture with influences from the renaissance and gothic style revival movement. Retaining elements of classical Georgian designs, such as columns, high ceilings, and porches, Restaurant 1889 exudes a timeless elegance.
Throughout its long history, this building has served as a telegraph and post office, remaining significant for over a century. In 1985, it was transferred to the Australian Postal Commission and eventually transformed into a commercial entity by the Ramm family in 2001. They developed it into a micro-brewery, complete with a tavern, restaurant, and even a banquet center. In 2020, the Bredhauer family took ownership, ensuring that The Brewery remains a family-run establishment.
Restaurant 1889 has undergone several transformations over the years, previously operating as a sports bar, an award-winning Malt restaurant, and a Smokehouse restaurant. However, in September 2021, we decided to take a new direction. Our focus now is on serving fresh, wholesome food that pleases the palate of everyone, with no boundaries when it comes to cuisine.
As a nod to the building's rich history, we have chosen to name our new restaurant after its completion date - Restaurant 1889. Join us for an unforgettable dining experience where you can indulge in delicious cuisine, immerse yourself in the historic surroundings, and create lasting memories with family and friends. Whether you're visiting for a special occasion or simply looking for a place to relax and enjoy freshly brewed beer, The Brewery and Restaurant 1889 is the perfect destination.

"Loved this place, best food we've had in a while, highly recommend. I am mystified why you would want to pay for "pub food" when you can choose fine dining. So nice we went two nights in a row."
"We dined here for the first time last night. The restaurant itself is beautiful but there was zero atmosphere. No music until right at the end when everyone was ready to leave and prior to that despite being fairly empty the noise from conversations echoed and made it very loud. Food was tasty but our mains came to the table cold. There was only a small number of people in the restaurant yet the service was very slow. The staff were lovely but would just disappear for periods of time. We had to ask a number of times for them to clear glasses and plates etc. So much potential to be a nice restaurant but just a frustrating experience for the high price. I don’t like leaving bad reviews but for the price this place needs to do better."
"No atmosphere, even some background music would have been nice. Food was tasty but steaks and lamb came out not much better than body temperature. Couldn’t even melt the butter. Having waited so long we ate and left. Restaurant was quiet yet the service was very slow and we even had to ask for plates to be cleared. Certainly a disappointing experience for the price we paid."
"Loved the atmosphere, lovely staff and great wine…… but…….No wait staff on the door, the water glass had lipstick on it, no toilet paper in the toilets, two broken taps with water running in the bathroom, food was very slow to come out and cold when it got there, they explained they were short staffed and slow because the restaurant shares the kitchen with the front bar and they were busy, desert was offered for free because of our experience but it also took forever to come out we ended up grabbing it take away (sticky date pudding) and threw it out as it was burnt on the bottom. I don’t usually write reviews but for the price we paid….. very disappointing."
"Food was beautiful, service was great, atmosphere was okay, it was a quiet night. Menu is small, however we were told that it will be changing and there will be additional items added. Would definitely dine here again."
