Figure Eight Pools
About the Business
Welcome to Figure Eight Pools, a unique and captivating tourist attraction located on a dangerous rock shelf in Sydney's Royal National Park, near Burning Palms Beach. Nestled in the City of Wollongong, New South Wales, this establishment is a must-visit for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts.
Please note that injuries occur frequently at Figure Eight Pools, and it is crucial to prioritize your safety during your visit. Many individuals have been unexpectedly dragged across the rock shelf by freak waves, resulting in head injuries, broken bones, and severe cuts and bruises from slipping on rocks. It is important to be aware of the potential risks and take necessary precautions.
One aspect to consider is the lack of emergency access at Figure Eight Pools. Injured individuals may have to stay overnight due to the absence of immediate medical assistance. This highlights the importance of being cautious and prepared during your visit.
Furthermore, it is essential to be aware that Figure Eight Pools lacks basic facilities such as toilets, water, food, and bins. The journey to reach the pools can be challenging and demanding, especially on hot days. It is advisable to come well-prepared with ample supplies to ensure a comfortable experience.
Despite the warnings, the temptation to capture a selfie at Figure Eight Pools can be strong. However, it is strongly recommended to opt for a safer alternative by joining a guided tour offered by certified operators such as Emu Trekkers and M8 Explorer. These tours are conducted during low tide, low swell, and safe ocean conditions, ensuring a well-managed and secure experience.
We encourage visitors to have a backup plan and consider alternative destinations if conditions at Figure Eight Pools are deemed dangerous on the day of your planned visit. Safety should always be the top priority.
For directions, safety guidelines, and practical information, please refer to the visitor info section on our website. Additionally, if you are looking to escape the crowds and traffic jams, consider exploring the neighboring Heathcote National Park, a stunning weekend paradise and a hidden gem.
To enhance your experience, we recommend downloading the free NSW National Parks app, which allows you to access maps, discover various parks, explore activities, and find accommodations, even without mobile reception.
Come and immerse yourself in the beauty and allure of Figure Eight Pools, but always remember to prioritize your safety and be prepared for the challenges that may arise.

"Wow finally had a chance to visit the most talked about pool in the RNP. Probably the closest car park to the Figure 8 pool is the Garawarra Car park. It's a good one hour hike from the car park to the pool with a few challenges and rock scrambling, would not recommend being kids. It's grade 4 and should only go during low tide. But the hike is definitely worth the reward at the end. I can see why people want that picture perfect shot for their instagram. Would definitely recommend people come at least once, and see the natural beauty for themselves."
"I went here today. Luckily no rain and low tide. The paths to figure 8 pool are quite rough so watch your steps carefully. Not suggesting for bringing children. The scenery is great !"
"It's an incredible experience! It is made simpler because an excellent footpath has been developed to access the area. It takes 50 to 60 minutes to walk there, and 1 hour 30 to 2 hours to return. I suggest everyone to go there on low tides."
"Lovely walk even without the pools. There is a newish car park which makes it very easy to access and the path is very well marked. It’s about an hour each way if you are a good walker and the section along the rocks is easy enough. Be sure to time your visit at low tide. We were lucky to have the pools all to ourselves for about 30 minutes and there were only 10 people there at most but low tide was 6:30 pm and we arrived around 4:30 pm. It takes about an hour to get there from the city so it’s a nice half day trip and a great intro to the Royal National Park if you have not already been there."
"This is one very nice hike at the coast of the Pacific Ocean in Royal National Park. Before you start to hike, you should consider: 1st: Look for the tide at Royal National Park home page. The hike is possible at low tide only. When the water becomes too high, things are getting dangerous, the force of the water is serious. 2nd: Have suitable shoes. Hiking boots or trekking boots (minimum!) are recommendet. I have seen people in flip flops and sandals... and bleeding feet. Especially at the coast it's not just walking in the sand, there is a quite long rocky part of the hike."
