About the Business
Welcome to Caruggi, a charming establishment located at 66 Little Malop Street in Geelong, Australia. Inspired by the medieval center of Genoa, our name translates to "little alleyway" in Genovese dialect, reflecting the labyrinth of narrow streets that wind through ancient Genoa. Just like its Italian counterpart, Caruggi in Geelong is a place of culinary delights, serving as a restaurant, food establishment, and point of interest.
Stepping into Caruggi is like stepping into a time capsule, as we embrace the traditions and flavors of centuries past. Our menu is a tribute to classic dishes, prepared with a deep respect for the quality of ingredients. We strive to support local suppliers and growers, while also incorporating top-notch imported goods. With our ever-evolving specials, there is always a new dish waiting to be discovered.
As lovers of fine wine, we have curated a selection that showcases indigenous Italian grape varieties, as well as Italian varieties grown right here in Australia. Our wine list features iconic growers and makers, alongside emerging stars. Whether you're a wine connoisseur or simply appreciate a good glass, our bar area is open all day, offering coffee, cakes, beer, and of course, wine. It's the perfect place to spend a leisurely afternoon, exploring our list of regional Amaros and Grappa.
If you find yourself falling in love with the flavors of Caruggi, fear not! Our retail space offers an ever-growing collection of wines and Italian produce for you to purchase and enjoy at home. Alternatively, you can conveniently order from our online shop for delivery.
At Caruggi, we are proud to have Massimiliano, a talented Chef and owner hailing from the town of Recco. Recco is famous for its Focaccia col formaggio, and we are possibly the only place in Australia where you can savor this simple yet addictive dish.
In the true spirit of the Caruggi, our establishment is filled with little pockets and alcoves, waiting to be discovered and settled into. So come and immerse yourself in the ambiance of our Ligurian-inspired space, where history, tradition, and delicious cuisine come together.

"I’d say the desserts were much more tasty and memorable than its pasta. The tiramisu was so good - having to share it with the table felt like every bite was so precious. The pastas were tasty, don’t get me wrong. But they were tad over cooked and soft. Ingredients were fresh though. A nice restaurant nonetheless - it’s just not a repeat-visit kind of spot for me."
"Celebrating our 53rd anniversary - the food was delicious, service friendly and knowledgeable regarding specials, menu and wines. Couldn’t fault any of it, had the loveliest day. Thankyou."
"A beautiful place with very tasty food. The staff is very friendly too. You won't regret visiting here for a meal."
"Food was very basic, lacked taste and there was nothing fresh about it. We had the simple spaghetti napoli, which was waterly and tasted like it came from a cheap jar. The Pansotti con salsa di noci was the better of the dishes, but was heavy and texture of the sauce was off putting. The steak was nice, but rather fatty and the sauce did not complement it. Focaccia col formaggio was the star of the meal, and hit all the senses, I would recommend trying it. The resturant was so loud we could hardly hear each other speak. If you wanted an intimate dinner, this is not the place. Service was good and staff were very attentive. The wine list was great and we had a lovely bottle. Overall rather disappointing experience."
"My expectation of this place was a good taste at least in their ‘specials’. Prices are a bit expensive for the portion of meals and despite that it’s a worthy place to have a celebration (birthday, anniversary or just a romantic dinner). The atmosphere was cozy. Service was friendly and efficient. Menu is extensive (starters, antipasto, pasta, pizza, mains, specials and desserts). In addition, they had a wide variety of wines. In my opinion, it’s a fancy restaurant that only deserves one visit."
