Lyneham Wetlands
About the Business
Welcome to Lyneham Wetlands, a beautiful establishment located in Lyneham, Goodwin Street, Australia. As an establishment, park, and point of interest, Lyneham Wetlands offers a unique and immersive experience for visitors.
Managed by the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate - Environment, Lyneham Wetlands is part of a series of wetlands constructed in the Sullivan's Creek Catchment. These wetlands play a crucial role in preserving and enhancing the local environment.
At Lyneham Wetlands, you will find a range of amenities and features designed to enhance your visit. Seating areas, informal play areas, viewing spots, pedestrian paths, artwork, and shade are all available for your enjoyment. Whether you're looking for a peaceful spot to relax or a place to explore with your family, Lyneham Wetlands has something for everyone.
The construction of the off-line wetland at Hawdon St, Dickson, was completed in December 2011. This wetland and its surrounding areas have been carefully planted with a wide variety of locally occurring plants, creating a vibrant and diverse ecosystem.
One of the key features of Lyneham Wetlands is its commitment to sustainability. Excess stormwater is piped to the Dickson Playing Fields and stored in on-site tanks, reducing the use of potable water and helping the ACT Government achieve its water reduction targets. This dedication to water conservation is just one example of Lyneham Wetlands' commitment to environmental stewardship.
The wetlands also serve as an educational resource for local schools. Students from Dickson College and Majura Primary have contributed to the wetlands by designing and creating tile mosaics that reflect the surrounding environment. These mosaics have been incorporated into the paving at the Dickson wetland, adding a touch of creativity and community involvement to the space.
Lyneham Wetlands is home to a variety of wildlife, including maned wood ducks, black swans, and frogs. These animals have quickly adapted to the wetland environment, creating a thriving ecosystem that visitors can observe and appreciate. The presence of these species serves as a testament to the success of the wetlands in providing a habitat for local wildlife.
Community engagement is a vital part of Lyneham Wetlands' mission. Over 200 people attended the Community Planting Day, where they planted native grasses, shrubs, and trees, and installed tree guards to protect the plants. This event was followed by a BBQ, where volunteers enjoyed organic sausages, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared responsibility for the wetlands.
Lyneham Wetlands is not just a place to visit; it is a place to learn and connect with nature. Year 1 and 2 students from North Ainslie School were the first members of the public to view the wetland, providing them with a unique opportunity to engage with their local environment.
Opened to the public in April 2012, Lyneham Wetlands is a testament to the power of community involvement and environmental stewardship. With its diverse plant life, thriving wildlife, and commitment to sustainability, Lyneham Wetlands is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a tranquil escape in the heart of Australia.
