ACT Legal Aid Commission
About the Business
Welcome to the ACT Legal Aid Commission, a local government office and point of interest located at 2 Allsop Street in Canberra, Australia. As an establishment committed to providing legal assistance to the community, we offer a range of services to ensure access to justice for all.
In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, we prioritize the health and safety of both our clients and staff. If you have tested positive for coronavirus or feel unwell, we kindly request that you refrain from approaching our reception. Instead, please reach out to our free Helpline on 1300 654 314 or email Legalaid@legalaidact.org.au, so we can determine the best way to assist you. Remote appointments are available via telephone for your convenience.
One of our key initiatives is to help transition TPV/SHEV holders to the resolution of status visa. If you require assistance in this matter, please call our Legal Aid information helpline on 1300 654 314. Additionally, we provide specialized services such as the Older Persons ACT Legal Service (OPALS) at (02) 6243 3436 and the Family Violence & Personal Protection Unit at (02) 6207 1874.
At the ACT Legal Aid Commission, we are proud to be on the frontline of providing legal services to the community. We offer free and confidential information, legal advice, and assistance to tenants in the ACT. If you are a subclass 449 holder, we provide free legal assistance to help you apply for permanent visas.
Furthermore, we offer free, independent legal support services for individuals who wish to share their stories with the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation of People with Disability. We also provide similar support for those participating in the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.
Our dedicated team of lawyers is available at the ACT Magistrates Court, Children's Court, and Family Court to provide urgent advice and assistance without an appointment. Additionally, we understand that legal costs can be a burden, which is why we offer grants to help with ongoing expenses if you are unable to afford a private lawyer.
Through our publications and Community Legal Education workshops, we provide free legal information to the public. We also have specialist domestic and family violence lawyers available every day of the week to provide free legal help, regardless of income or property.
In addition to our legal services, we offer non-legal support through our Aboriginal Liaison Officer, Cultural Liaison Officer, and Family Violence Officer. We understand that immigration issues can be complex, which is why we offer free legal information and advice in this area as well.
Our commitment to serving the community extends to young people between the ages of 12 and 25, as we provide free and confidential legal services tailored to their needs. Furthermore, we offer legal assistance to older individuals who may be experiencing legal issues as part of our dedication to supporting all members of the community.
Lastly, the Family Law Pathways Network, which we are proud to be a part of, serves as an inclusive network for professionals working with separated or separating families.
At the ACT Legal Aid Commission, we strive to ensure that everyone has access to justice and legal support. Whether you require advice, assistance, or information, our team is here to help. Contact us today to learn more about how we can assist you.

Reviews
"A very poor customer service. The application form was filled 2 weeks ago, and there has been no decision made, so I’m fully unaware whether I’ll be supported in the court or not. They do enjoy keeping their customers stressed knowing that the court hearing is in a couple of days."
"I’m doubting the qualifications of people who work at here. Very inexperienced and unprofessional. They lack of basic knowledge on laws. Not even able to explain a fairy simple legal question. Instead they said” give me your email address and I’ll send you a link of info. You’ll find the answer there”. Legal “aid”?? What a joke."
"Reception is lovely, very polite. Due to limited funding you don't necessarily get the same solicitor representing you, which has implications for poorer people getting justice."
"Beware of Isabell Harris! Do NOT waste your time with her as she will treat you like absolute dirt. I can only assume she has some sort of serious personal issue but she should be removed from her role immediately. If she answers the phone then end the conversation and call back another time hoping someone else answers."
"great legal help for all the needy"
